I think that in order to be a "Great Rock Band", you must continue to tour, or be dead. That why I will include Jimmy hedrix, but Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and many others certainly won't be on my list, because their bands as a whole abandoned their fans. GNR is a good example, because I find Velvet Revolver to be nothing more than a continuation of STP. So heres my list:

-AC/DC
-Metallica
-Rush
-Van Halen
-Motley Crue
-Steppenwolf
-The Doors
-Jimmy Hendrix
-Megadeth
-Ted Nugent (Even though he's a moron)
-And last, and least on the list is Alice Cooper. He may be a greed driven jackass, but he still keeps his fans happy.

Micheal Bolton was a waste of talent. He is a talented singer and songwriter, but I'll agree that after "Everybody's Crazy" he sold out and went totally pop to sell albums to women.

Good one, yeah the Ryder boys did it up good didn't they.

I thought I'd throw Oasis in there for doing a brilliant job pissing off just about everyone...
I think attitude is what great R & R is all about.
Besides I think Noel G is a brilliant song writer.

Flame away.

Drunk scum bags? You must be refering to Green Day.

The Scorpions have been rocking hard since the 60's, but no one's heard of them.

They get more radio play than Dokken and Megadeth around here.

I saw Dokken at Knott's Berry Farm. Can it get any lower than that? Rick Springfield at the Ventura County Fair maybe?

Sure it can. There's a band in San Francisco (The Phenomenauts, I think) that drives out to shows in a van and illegally plays on the street while people are waiting in line for the doors to open.

Choices to consider that are not in the never-ending-Uber-touring category (e.g. Stones, U2)

Some bands who knew when to call it a day...

Talking Heads
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Clash
The Police
Hüsker Dü
Uncle Tupelo
The Pogues
Phish (a personal favorite)

Wrong.......
Quote; " Rock and Roll isn't about laying in a corner with a needle in your arm, that's being a f*&$ed up junkie, rock and roll is about getting up on stage every night and blowing people away"

N.G. 2003

Drunken Coke heads perhaps, Junkies.. Never.

Pete Dougherty of the Libertines now there a serious Junkies. But a pretty good band none the less

Where is your list? Other than your defense of the bloated over hyped U2 what have you to offer?
Someone else posted U2 haven't had a decent album since War he's right.

Zooropa? you've got to be kidding. self indulgent tripe.....

This is suppose to be a list of ROCK and ROLL bands, did you know that?

so there's a difference between coke heads and junkies? not in my books..

as for my list, i dont believe there can really be a top 10, well there can, but i'm not going to compile a list because its just too hard. but to say u2 has never had a good album since war is just plain ignorant. The joshua tree for example has been consistently voted one of the best albums of all time (even though i dont like it that much)

So you dont think U2 is a ROCK and ROLL band? if so, im going to flat out call you an idiot.

As for my statement that U2 is the best live band, ill still stand by that. 240,000 tickets (for 3 concerts) sold in 50 minutes, 3.4 million tickets sold in total last year.

Im guessing, if a poll was made, U2 or Oasis, who is better, i would wager that U2 would be the more popular vote. To have Oasis on the list of top 10 R&R bands in the world is crazy. To have U2 on there, totally appropriate.

Im finished with this arguement

p.s. U2 Grammy Awards - 16 Oasis - 0

oh, and not everone thought zooropa was tripe...

Ooh.... you had him until you decided to not heed your "I'm finished with this argument" and tacked on the Post Script about .... GRAMMIES!!

Grammies are a joke and most good folk have known that long before they gave Milli Vanilli their little tropies and then asked for them back....

Your argument up to that point was good enough. Though I like Oasis, their catalog does not hold a candle to the accomplishments of U2. 20 or 50 years from now people will know U2 like they know great acts of the 50's or 60's, while Oasis will be referenced by in-the-know oldies stations and trivia experts.

Unfortunately I'll have give you that one. there is no accounting for taste though.

what does that prove? remember these are the cheeseheads that voted for Jethro Tull over Metallica for the first Heavy Metal grammy? Totally out of touch.

I'm done, but this has been fun..

Oh by the way, I'm not really that fond of Oasis hence there last place position in my list,
I just like groups that aren't afraid to say F.U. and don't give a **** if you like them or not.

MC5, Stooges, Nirvana, all prime examples of real R & R bands not bag lick corporate shills.

Again it's been fun, by the way are you Irish? I'll take Stiff Little Fingers or the Pogues over U2 anyday

or the Pogues

Yeah! I mentioned them above. I'm talking Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash and Red Roses for Me Pogues. Anything they did with Shane McGowan was freaking awesome.

I'm going to have them play "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" at my funeral/wake whenever it may be that I pass on.

Abso goddamned lutely... I've seen the Pogues play both with and without Shane, both gigs were brilliant.
although it has to be said Spider was a bit more "lucid" than Shane. The big rumor at the time was Joe Strummer fronting the band that night, a 12Hr trip to Vancouver.... No Joe, but a great gig none the less.

Wish I could have seen the Mescaleros...

RIP, Joe Strummer

You may not have directly said they werent a ROCK and ROLL band, but you pretty much implied it with this comment

you cant blame me for questioning that comment.

it prooves a lot actually, if they only won one grammy, then i might say it was a fluke, or it was out of touch, but 16?

i hope you are not assuming u2 are a bunch of bag lick corporate shills.

In an attempt to genrate a more radio-friendly image, "Rage Against The Machine" will now be known as "Mildly Remonstrate Aginst The Machine". Sorry, I actually liked that band except for the singer.

Wow, I've read a troubling amount of dis-and/or-not-enough respect for Jimi
... I still proclaim the 'band of gypsys' as the most badass, though short lived trio in the history of rock.

Also, nobody has mentioned fishbone .. -fishbone anyone? ..and Living Colour, my hat's off to them too

I considered them, but only up until the album Tim. After Bob Stinson left the band, it became more of a Westerberg project more than it was The Replacements (see Don't Tell A Soul and especially All Shook Down).

Let It Be was about as cool as the 80's ever got....

There is only one greatest rock band !

tHe SeX PiSt0Ls !

Nothing else matters before or after !!!!!!!

Some examples of 9 other 'good' bands, however, might be.....

The New york Dolls
Rolling Stones
Avengers
Muffs
Jesus and Mary Chain
Dead Boys
Damned
Clash
X
Blackhearts
:D

Television should be on this list ;-)

The Muffs, such an underrated band . Blonder and Blonder is up there with Milo Goes To College imo.

I like post Stinson 'mats, but yeah, I see your point.
