Pink Floyd has been named the world's greatest rock act of all time. The band, which reunited on stage at Live 8 this year for the first time in 24 years, beat other rock icons like U2 and The Who to the title. Led Zeppelin came second in the poll of almost 60,000 rock fans, followed by The Rolling Stones.

The Who was fourth eclipsing AC/DC, U2, Guns N' Roses, and Nirvana. Jimi Hendrix came 10th after Bon Jovi in the poll, carried out by British digital radio station Planet Rock. The survey of 58,000 listeners also named the 1970's the golden age of rock followed by the 1960s, the Spandex years of the 1980s and grunge decade the 1990s.

Pink Floyd is thought to have sold a staggering 200 million albums worldwide since forming in 1965, including Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall.

Not a bad "start" for the list....I don't quite agree with a few. I don't think Bon Jovi or U2 belong in there for sure. The others are probably right...or at least close.

To replace U2 and Bon Jovi, I think I'd toss in:
Fleetwood Mac and Heart (my own personal preference).

When i saw Bon Jovi i was like.. "why is he there?" I agree with you, Fleetwood Mac should be up there. Nirvana maybe shouldn't of been there. I haven't really listened to them much. I think they should do another poll.

Okay, sure, Pink floyd, but only prior to Dark Side of the Moon. Revolver-era Beatles. The Stones reached a peak around Beggars Banquet, and declined swiftly. Buffalo-Springfield and The Byrds. Quicksilver Messenger Service realized a masterpiece in Happy Trails. Fleetwood Mac was actually pretty interesting before the Lindsay Buckingham era. I caught an astounding King Crimson concert in the mid-seventies: their playing was over-the-top anger and fury combined with superhuman precision. For a sustained career of musical excellence, I would have to nominate Van Morrison...maybe Neil Young for a second choice.

Aerosmith - completely left out? WTF

What a great history in rock music.

Yes Aerosmith is also another, as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival. I also wonder what was at 11th place, 12th, 13th etc. As I said before, there should be a re-count. 60,000 rock fans is a lot, but I do think there is a hellava lot more out there.

I agree. I went to a Billy Joel and Elton John concert recently and there were 20,000 fans there alone. 60,000 is not even a speck on the radar.

I can't think of too many bands that have had the continued success and longivity as Aerosmith.

The respondants must have been young. Or ignorant. Or both.

i cant believe u2 are 6th, they have consistently been the past 20 years, if not 25. In my opinion, i would toss out AC/DC, complete crap, same with Guns N' Roses, and Bon Jovi?! HAHAA!!

The rolling stones have been around since the stone age, sold a lot of records, but their music over the last 15 year have been garbage, and shouldve called it a day a long time ago.

I somewhat agree with Nirvana, but they just didnt have a chance to really show what they were worth.

i actually agree that aerosmith should be up there, even though i absolutly despise them

The New york Dolls
Rolling Stones
Avengers
Muffs
Jesus and Mary Chain
Dead Boys
Damned
Clash

Blackhearts

Produced =mixed.
Very few pre-production recordings\destroyed as it was a massive seller.
The album was washed\toned down for the 'general audience' by Mr.Parsons.

BTO and Three Dog Night. No way you can pick 10. Too many Great Bands.

Surprised Hendrix made the top 10. Short timer and didn't make that much of an impact (at least to me).

I think he made an impact on all the rock musicians. I personally think he's the greatest guitarist ever.

Guns n' Roses blows. Alex rose is a posenger who can't sing
and only got a recording contract because he was shacking
up with some record company bigwigs daughter.
Slash is an alright guitarist but nothing spectacular.

I agree with Regular guy, the respondents of this poll
are young and stupid.

The Scorpions have been rocking hard since the 60's, but no one's heard of them. War has been around about as long, everyone knows a song or two by them, but they're so low-key, people don't know they're still around. The Grateful Dead had the following, but by their own admission, never cared about the sales. So who does that leave?

Sounds like this poll had a bias towards albums sold, not just popular vote. How was the poll conducted?

Metallica is the greatest hard-rocking band of all time.

[edit] For bands that deserve credit for flying below the general public's radar, how about Deep Purple/Rainbow, Bad Company, Motorhead, or Ozzy/Black Sabbath? For sheer talent, and consistently good music, that poll sucks.

U2's last good album was War. They may still have a guitarist named Edge, but they lost their edge. Bon Jovi? Yeah, maybe if you're 40, and a single woman. Heck, I've been a Pink Floyd fan for more than 20 years, but even I don't rank them near the top. Jimi Hendrix should have been higher (no pun intended) too. Witness Red House, or All Along the Watchtower - some of my all time favorite Hendrix tunes.

I found it in a newspaper I was reading when I was on holidays. I found this link and its simular to the article i found. http://entertainment.news.com.au/story/0,10221,17669813-7484,00.html

Planet rock has been thought to create the poll but IMO I don't think it was good enough.

"That's right folks. Bon Jovi actually beat Hendrix."

If it were a bigger poll, it would be a lot different.

Well said. I'm gonna have to dissagree about The Scorpions though. I've heard enough of them to decide that I'd rather hear as little of those vocals as possible. That however is a personal preference. They were actually quite popular in Europe when I was little.
Bad Co, Deep Purple, Jimmi Hendrix... not enough credit for sure.

Are the Scorpions still going? I used to listen to them in the 1980's. Michael Schencker went on to other things with UFO (witness 'Strangers in the Night') and his own band MSG (who had one excellent album with Graham Bonnet on vocals, 'Assault Attack'). I wouldn't say that they deserved to be in the top 10 however.

you.. are... CRAZY!!!

u2's only sub-par (by u2's standards) album was POP, even still, many of the songs on there smoke other bands best attempts

plus they are the best live act, ever.

First... this is the most opinionated poll/thread you could post. The term "Rock Band" is so wide reaching.

My top ten will likely be different than most peoples. An for the record...U2??? I never understood that one. And best live show?? I beg to politley disagree.

Anyway...In no particular order:

Journey
Jimi Hendrix
Aerosmith (older stuff)
Creedance Clearwater Revival
The Rolling Stones(not the version that's been embarrassing themselves for the last 20 plus years either)
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Led Zepplin
Stevie Ray Von

There's too many good bands for just ten. :-)

Brian
01-09-06, 01:32 PM
Ok, I'll admit that the Scorpions were a much better band until they learned proper English. You can hear the difference between there old stuff and the later stuff. And I'll admit that I only liked US when they were angry kids, not whatever it is they are now.

For live shows, The Firm topped even the US Festival for me. Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, Chris Slade, and Tony Franklin. The voice of Bad Company, the guitar of Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page may have been completely wasted, but he took out his violin bow, and played his guitar with that, with a pyramid of lasers spinning around him. Never to be repeated again.

Oh, I saw Dan Akroyd, Bruce Willis, and a live Belushi perform Blues Brothers tunes after a Fabulous Thunderbirds show at the House of Blues. Probably won't see that again either.

If Bon Jovi made the list, why didn't Michael Bolton? He started out as a rocker?

It's all about opinions, glad to see there's no real flaming here.

Michael Bolton was a soul shouter plain and simple.
Listen to his remake of Otis Redding songs (dock of the bay )
hell of a voice and hell of a waste of talent.

Brian

By the time he covered Otis, he was already gone. When he did "Everybody's Crazy", he wasn't making music just to sell albums to homely women.

No to U2. No to Bon Jovi. No to half those names on that list. For me, it's not about popularity or sales, but talent and influence on other bands/sounds.

Stevie Ray Vaughn was perhaps the best guitar player that ever lived, but to split hairs, he was blues, not rock.

At least the Ramones; they put together influences that make up the sound and in doing so taught the Sex Pistols and Clash something or another.

I admit it, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. I celebrate the guy's entire collection. For my money it doesn't get any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".
