Here is a little artical that I found interesting and it also the way I feel about the same subject. Do not read if the word a**hole offends you.

AMEN. I'm VERY religious about not littering. Mother Nature is my god and the great outdoors is my church. How would you like it if I strolled into your church, stubbed my cig in the holy water dish, and proceeded to eat munchies and throw wrappers under the pews.

I've been known to get physical with belligerent litterers...

We've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Needless to say, I agree wholeheartedly. I remember someone from the old Bicycleforum.com site who wrote a letter to their local newspaper along the same lines.

I spend a fair amount of time running and cycling on the roads and streets of Detroit and it's suburbs. I am constantly amazed at the type and amount of trash that I see alongside the road.

Judging by the number of beer and liquor bottles and the articles of clothing I see alongside sidewalks and on curbs on a daily basis, I can only believe that after the sun goes down, and I am safely in my bed, that all my neighbors open their doors, flood into the street and begin to remove all of their clothing and then start drinking with wild abandon. I believe the party stops just before my morning commute.

I don't litter but I use to toss apple cores, banana peels, orange peels, etc over my shoulder thinking "that'll be gone in a day or so"

My wife got mad at me cause she said it attracts animals to the road then they get flattened by cars.

Now i don't....welllll mostly I don't. Would that be considered litter?

Great story, DBD. Some homely truths there.

I never litter, and thankfully, most of the rides we've been on don't have any that we've seen. If I take fruit with me, I will discard that, as far from the trail as I can throw it. I don't have a problem with skins and cores. Anything else I take with me comes back with me.

But, one thing did piss me off. I did the 90km London-Brighton bike ride this year in June. It attracts 27,000 riders and this is a big problem for litter. At the finish in Brighton, Liptons (of the tea making company) were giving out 1000s of cartons of complementary iced tea. After 90km, 1000s of riders did. Did they take their litter home? Not a damned chance. There were 1000s of cartons littering the streets and I felt sorry for the council who had to clean that up the following day.

And yet, it started with one rider, taking the carton, and dumping it on the road - and there we have our first *****hole. Then the second *****hole arrives on the scene, and from that point on, there were *****holes in their 1000s. The biggest *****hole of the lot, was Lipton's. Maybe next year they should stuff their complementary iced tea, right up, yup, you guessed it - deep in their *****hole.

For the most part the trails around here are clean. Most of the users take their trash with them. For the ones that don't here is a little guy that is showing his feelings:

I hate! litter louts.

It appales me to see all the disgarded garbage strewn alongside the roadsides and beauty spots desicrated by these morons. even when there are loads of litter-bins, its just another sickness of present society :mad:

Another point regarding litter concerns the Pro cyclists in the grand tours.
Watching these on tv it is rather annoying to see these guys throwing their used water bottles and wrappings into the verges,
not a very good example to set for watching youngsters.

Did the organizers provide plenty of garbage cans in the finish area? They could also mention the problem in their literature and any speeches etc at the start/closing ceremonies.

Hopefully next year it won't be as much of a problem.

OK guys, time for me to attend an anger management class.

I was coming to work this morning and there's this guy in a brand new Toyota Sequoia and he's smoking. But he doesn't want to stink up his new truck so he's holding his cigarette out the window when he's not puffing. So I'm having to smell this stinky cig cuz the f'in smoker doesn't want to stink his car up. When he's done he just flicks the thing on the ground and I lose it. I ask him if he wants to get out and pick up his garbage. He ignores me like I'm a lunatic (which I was at the time) so I proceed to tell him what a f'in pr!ck he is and had a red light come into play I'm pretty certain I would have removed him from his vehicle and shoved a cig butt up his left nostril! The world is his ashtray. Had I been able to get his discarded butt and catch up to him I would have tossed it back in his window. Now your new vehicle REALLY smells like smoke!

AAAHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

There were some wheelie dumpsters in the vicinity, but I was too distracted by the sidewalk-to-sidewalk 'carpet' of cartons to notice much else. It was apalling. Anyone who did the ride (and I'm sure the forum has some riders who did, besides me) will vouch for the mess. It was astronomical in its content. It was not just the immediate area where they were handing out the drinks, but several hundred meters along the road, you could see these damned cartons everywhere.
