Fifty Plus (50+) - Rear rack question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I bought a rack for the back of my Univega, but it doesn't fit. The screws aren't long enough, plus it hits my rear reflector, etc. I'm going to have to return it. Here's my question:
Anyone with any experience with the racks that simply bolt on to the seat post? Can they actually carry a bit of weight? (Gym bag, lock, cell phone, etc.) Do they stay in place?

We have a Topeak QR (quick release) seat post rear rack we use on our tandem when we take longer rides or need to carry more than is comfortable in our pockets. It works fine and is rated at 15lbs and can handle that much weight easily. We also have a Topeak slide-on trunk (medium size). It's a quality product, a bit spendy, but if you look for sales, you can get one for quite a bit less. We would buy it again, and I guess that's the best testimony for any purchase. OHB
