The Good All-Around Tire thread made me think. I want to prepare my road bike for a tour and I want to add wider tires. How do I kow how wide of I tire I go? I am currently using 25C tires on a Cannodale SR500.

How wide can I go?

How wide should I go for mostly roads?

Most road bikes will take a 28 in the rear and some forks a 25.

700x45 is the widest that ive heard of..not sure though, anyone wanna confirm that? Im running 700x32 on mine

How about taking your bike down to your LBS and trying to fit a few wheels with wide tires to see if they work? Hybrids usually have wider tires. You want be sure that you have brake and fork clearance.

The "new 29-inch tires" that are now available on mountain bikes are actually 700c tires (ERTRO 622 mm). A quick look at tire websites shows that Schwalbe and Continental both make a 54-622 tire. It won't fit on an ordinary touring bike, though...

A good place to look is here: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html The widest tire you can fit will depend on your rim and your frame clearance. Look at your current tires - are they pretty close to the frame? Is there room for a larger tire? Wider tires are likely to be taller as well.

My full-on touring bike can only go to 700x42 according to the builder. 700x38 was the limit with fenders. The guy who said take it to a bike shop was right on the money. I found a German tire company, not Schwalbe, that offered a 700x60 tire. A friend who was an HPV builder laced two MTB rims together with two tires side by side and built a frame to hold them. Used it to ride in sand. He rigged a jack shaft/transfer reduction gear to give him a 3 gear/inch low. One spring I followed him up Fargo Street in LA; a 35% grade. He was pulling a trailer with his infant son in it.
