Just wondering what brakes everyone uses. I think its got to that stage now, that disc brakes have probably taken over the rim brakes? But I'm not so sure. Anyway on my Giant Yukon I use Hayes MX-2 disc brakes. I'm thinking of putting some Avid BB7's on, but I want to wait a bit longer and put them on my next rig.

on my Devinci, just the stock Hayes nine 8'. And on my GT mod, magura hs22 hydro v'brakes.

My steelhead is gonna get a Hope mini mono for the front and either another hs22 in the back or a mini mono. But for now, im just throwing on a spare pair of Hayes nine's I have.

Stock Tektro v-brakes on both bikes actually. Rear only on the BMX.

I think I might get a new wheelset, and get discs for the hardrock. If I do, probably XT on rhyno lites and Avid mech's to go with my Avid SD7 levers.

I have Pro-Max disc breaks on my MTB.

The more and more you see MTB's the more and more you see them with disc breaks.

The time will come where v-breaks die out. Then disc breaks will die out because there will be something better then disc breaks.

As time moves on, parts update.

Will go for the same levers when I eventually get the avid mech's. Was looking at the FR-5's, but the SD7's seem to be the better pick.

Apparently it's about time that I invest in a new set of V's for the ol' Hardrock as the Arch 40 I had out back decided to give up the ghost riding home and unfortunately Avid no longer makes parts for that model (Heck they're not even making Arch series brakes anymore  )

Avid SD V brakes and Avid mechanical discs. And for the last year now, I've been meaning to put some Magura Hydraulics on the tandem. I'll wait until I'm back in the US to order some stainless lines.

I have Pro-Max disc breaks on my MTB.I was going to correct your spelling of "brake" in this instance, but in this case the way you spelled it is more accurate

The more and more you see MTB's the more and more you see them with disc breaks. This is unfortunate as they cheaper bikes are coming with inferior disc systems purely out of fashion. Entry level bikes shouldn't come with disc brakes as the people who typically ride them have no idea how to maintain them. Disc brakes can actually prove to be more dangerous and less effective when not properly cared for

The time will come where v-brakes die out. I doubt it. They still make center pull cantilevers, and they've been out moded for about ten years

Then disc breaks will die out because there will be something better then disc brakes. They've been working on cars for 40 years or better. A great change is NOT imminent

I've seen customers walk past a Giant Boulder to look at an Apollo or Malvern Star because they had disc brakes. But you get what you pay for.

Exactly. Just because they're "cool" looking. Nevermind the fact that a decent yet inexpensive set of V-brakes is a far better choice than the crappy disc brakes they put on the lower end bikes these days

We have customers come in looking for full suspenion in the $300 range. We don't even offer a hardtail at that price. Our cheapest FS is well over $1,000. They're the same people that want discs for $300. And we look like snobs when we try to explain that a decent set of discs will cost as much as the most basic bike we sell.

Personally, any kind of Avid brakes will do the job.

Expat (and Raiyn), you should grab one of the bikes with V's, go out in the parking lot and ride some trials moves on their car to show them how well the v-brakes work :P

Brian

Nah, I just try to not be insulting when I tell them that a decent V brake will always be a better choice than an entry level disc.

I'd leave creases in the sheetmetal. Good discs are great, but cheapo ones are ****

Anything that isn't Avid for starters. Promax and Tektro's are absolute ****. Hayes mechanicals aren't much better, but they are better than Promax's.
Basically the best Mechanical disc brake on the market is the Avid BB7 followed by the BB5.
I hate to sound biased, but this is based on personal experience and working on many sets of these brakes

I've seen some mystery discs on ebay UK bikes. Scary stuff. Avid mechanicals are tandem-rated, need I say more?

Avid BB7's, 7 inch front, 6 inch rear. Could use a bit more for those long DH runs with the 29ers. Too much inertia.
