This weekend, I test rode a Cycle Genius Sparrow. It was very comfortable and easy to learn--obviously a great recumbent for an insecure beginner. But it also seemed a bit slow; it seemed like a good bike for running errands around town, but I'm not sure I could see myself taking it on the open road.

So here's my question: is this description typical of 20/20 CLWB's? Would a Tailwind perform roughly the same way? Has anyone ridden both bikes? If so, how do they compare?

I know, I know--the best way for me to answer this question is go to a Rans dealer and try a Tailwind. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a Rans dealer in NC, much less a Tailwind. In fact, I've found located only 4 new recumbents for sale east of Winston-Salem. That's four BIKES, not four dealers. :(

I'm starting to think maybe I want a SWB--but I want to try as many different kinds as possible, so I'm trying to give the LWB's a chance, too.

Any thoughts?

I have a Tailwind. The 20 inch wheels limit top speeds but are quick for around town. It also can be rough on the rear- end on a long ride because all your weight is on the rear wheel with little frame flex. I also have a LWB Tour Easy which is good for cruising but a little heavy for the hills. Both manufactorers make good quality bikes. Have you looked at the Rans V2. Buy what you want on the internet , shiping is less then a hundred and a lot of used bikes are here.

Thanks for your input about the Tailwind. I've been wanting to try one, but I haven't found a convenient dealer. In theory, there are Rans dealers around here; but in reality, they don't have any Rans bikes in stock.

How heavy is the Tour Easy? The website lists it at around 30 lbs, which doesn't sound too bad--but websites sometimes exaggerate.

I like the looks of the Rans V2, but I'm reluctant to buy something unless I've ridden it, or one like it. Already I've been surprised a few times. CLWB's haven't been quite as easy as I expected, while SWB's have felt more natural to me than I thought they would.

Here's a link to reviews of the Tailwind on roadbikereview.com. Lots of people seem to find them to be very fast and versatile. My review is the most recent as I just bought a used one. Yes, they are hard to find to test ride as people hang on to them! I've never ridden a CycleGenius, so I can't speak to them.
