Thinking about some new pedals and was curious to here some feedback on what sucks and what doesn't.

Time ATAC's are excellent pedals. Similarly Crank Bros' Eggbeaters are decent

i like crankbrothers eggbeaters or crankbrothers Candy for rocky technical rides

I have Shimano SPDs (424 and 505) on both of my offroad bikes right now. They were cheap and they work fine (not in mud though) but they aren't light. I think one pair is 350g and the other is over 400g. I'm not in any rush to do it but I will be swapping them out for the Eggbeater SL.

Good choices. They function in almost exactly the same manner as far as their retention system is concerned. I absolutely love my Times

glad you are back, you were definetly missed
I agree Time ATAC.
light weight is a relative term. I think the XS is a light pedal and some think the 322 grams is a tank. the XS are an excellent pedal unless you are into anything that requires a bigger platform than it, then the ZControl is the way to go TIME wise but they weigh more.

You can laugh at this.. I have been using a set of wellgo clipless pedals for about 8 years, and they have held up well. I got them for free too, from a friend who took them apart and couldn't get them back together. he gave me a pile of parts and in an hour I had clipless pedals! But now its time to move on.

I agree the XS is a great pedal. I'm slating them for my "Big Boy Roadie" project bike

I have the carbon. not the titanium ones but the carbon/chromeoly spindle ones.
I cant afford the carbon/titan and they wouldnt hold up to my fat self. they also only shave a few grams for over $100 more. Performance has the XE for under $80

Another vote for Time ATACs. I'm running the earlier generation ATACs simply because they haven't given me any reason to upgrade. If I manage to find some surplus cash or build up another bike, I'll definately go for the ATAC XS.

I have been using Time Atac's since they first came out, and still using the original pedals. Don't see any reason to change

As much as I hate to send more business to Shimano, the 520 are a good value. They work well and at around $50 they are cheap. I'd love Eggbeaters but when you need 9 sets at $100 per, well, I like sleeping in a bed too :) I can hear the sound of the rolling pin upside my head now. Ow.

I had used shimano 520s. They are good pedals for that price. Easy entry, and exit, and never had problems in 6 months or so. I still keep them for back up. One pair weighs 380 grams though.

I switched to Crank Bro's last year on both my mountain and road bikes. After a 35 mile mountain bike ride that I fought my SPD's the whole way due to the mud and crud, I made the switch. Got them for like $50 off pricepoint.com. Absolutely love them. Put the Candy's on the mountain and commuter, eggbeaters on the road.

I have some cheaper Shimano's and have been wondering if any pedal can actually work if there is mud. Someone once told me Times work well in slop. Are they that much better.

I like Frogs :p

My first set of clipless were Speedplays - I hated them. You have to rotate so silly far out before the cleat will release that I was always not getting out in time and ending up on my side. I picked those because I've had knee problems and figured a bunch of float would be good. I switched to 747s in '96 and have had no problems with them, and they're still going strong. They aren't the best in muddy stuff, but they aren't that bad either.

That said, when it's time for them to go away, I'll replace them with egg beaters or Time ATACs.

i thought of purchasing eggbeater at first. But my friend bought it already and he tested it out. I heard him complaining about tension problem. He told us that it was very easy to clip in but had a hard time to clip out. Even saw him fell down couple of times. I think the pedal is faulty coz eggbeater is a nice pedal i think. Anyway, i bought a pair of shimano M959 pedal. It works great for both clip in and out. I havent try it on muddy condition anyway.

Woah! Now that i have been enlightened on how one cannot release from frogs very easily & i don't want to fall down just cause i can't unclip from them  I must junk them & get Time's or Eggbeaters.. :)

Hey, to each their own...if you like 'em great. I wasn't implying they were crap, just that I didn't like them and why; not everyone knows that they need 20+ degrees of rotation until the cleats release.

I'm going to guess that there's some other meaning to that relating to the thread?

I got a set of Frogs for my roadbike because I knew I wanted double-sided pedals. However, I never could get used to the excessive (for me) float and release angle. Also, I personally would never use them for MTBing because of the toe-first entry method. I prefer pedals that can be engaged from multiple directions. I did end up switching to Speedplay Zeros on my roadbike and have been very happy with those.

I Really don't care , but i know that some of the frog users do not have cleats angled right.

Mtbike Quarterly says "they work well even when coated with portland cement" Oct.04
I cant vouch for cement but I can vouch nasty mud, horse poop, leaves, pine tags, ice, snow, and thick black gooey mud do not clog mine up. Ive used the Aliums and now have the XS and both are just as reliable in bad conditions.
