Mountain Biking - Biking shorts?

I finally feel the need to get some biking shorts. No don't waorry, not the tight ones roadies where. But the MTN biking kind. I went to REI, and the 2 kinds they had their were fine around the waist but were way to short for my liking. I'm 5'10" about 165 and wear 33 waist pants. Any suggestions for shorts that will fit, but not be short as a monkey? I would go to my lbs, but their cheapest shorts are like $70. I'm not looking to spend a ton of money either $30-40 perferably.

Any suggestions?

I wouldn't skimp on shorts. Your butt will thank you for a quality-oriented pair.

Oakley has some nice mtbing shirts.:)

Pearl Izumi has some decent stuff. I just ordered the Otis Short. Pretty decent. No padding, though.

i wear nike. got them at my lbs for $40. i wish they had a little more padding, but i like them.

They must do things differently in Texas. I would think that one's dangly bits hanging out the neck hole would make a shirt a poor choice as a riding short.

Hahaha, I didn't notice that but I would agree that an Oakley shirt would make a poor bike short.

how about some of the raodie type with a pair of regular shorts over top. you can get the roadies for a lot less than baggys and use your regular cargo, running,Birdwells whatever you want shorts over top.
I prefer the spandex type and if need be I will wear some A&N cargo shorts over top. I have $10 invested in the cargos, and $35 in the spandex. a good pair of baggys has a liner anyway that fits tight on the legs and has the chamois
if you crash a pair of baggies , you have lost a big investment. a good pair of spandex and a cheap pair of regulars over top and you will probably be out just the regulars

tas has a good point there. Plus if you ever go roadie (for training purposes or whatever) you don't have to buy new shorts.

Excellent point. Good point also Raiyn. I thin that is what I should look into doing, since there is quite a larger selection of road shorts around here opposed to baggies.

I must be riding in the wrong place, I haven't seen any ladies in the woods.

They make a padded boxxer short you could get, but it costs about as much as shorts.

Get some lycra and wear it!

There's an even more economical solution than road shorts under your favorite regular shorts. Since you are near an REI, check out the Andiamo cyling briefs. They're cheaper than shorts and still have the same chamois. If they don't have 'em in stock (it's winter and they run their cycling gear low), check online. You can have it shipped to the store and save the shipping charges too :) .

Thanks for the advice. Last week when I went there they were having a sale on their shorts, but i steered (sp?) clear of the roadie shorts, not thinking about wearing them under regular shorts :) I shall go back this week :)

correct me if Im wrong , but you evidently have NOTHING swinging between your legs that are of concern to you. OWWWWWW. my nuts hurt just thinking of wearing boxers on my bike

I have a pair of Fox shorts, lycra and padding inside, semi-baggy short outside, comes almost to my knee, with some pockets to boot.

I second the regular bike shorts with baggies of your choice over them. Personally, I gave baggies a try and always got them caught on the seat as I moved back and forth with the changing terrain. Just couldn't figure it out, so I go with plain old lycra. Looks dorky, works great. Funciton over form for me.

When I'm transiting to and from, I throw a pair of gym shorts over them so I can stop and get a drink or snack or whatever.

it's been said already but i agree too. this is what i run, i have the spankex shorts (i ride some road too) and just throw some running shorts over the top

try voler shorts. You will find NO better for the price or even twice the price.

I ride with spandex because the chamois is usually a lot better and dont care what people think of what Im wearing. I wear the regulars over top when I go to 7-11 or whatever because they have pockets and I hate carrying my wallet, keys,cellphone etc. in 1 hand and a Biggulp in the other.
I guess some folks havent gotten past that naked in the shower in 6th grade gym class and wondering about their stuff compared to that 8th graders stuff. I say to each their own. if you like baggies wear 'em if not, dont

I flip-flop between baggies (with lycra innards) and regular lycra shorts when I'm MTBing. For baggies, I wear Sugois which I can seem to find relatively cheap. I also have some absurdedly cheap Bellwether baggies I got on clearance for like $10 each. But you pay for what you get and I only wear those for those half-hour rides in the trails behind my house.

i just wear regular clothes with sexy tight roadie ones underneath. for the same price as special baggy riding ones, you can probably a couple of the tighties and use street clothes on top. for cold weather i use MOOSE tight full length under jeans.
