Classic & Vintage - Wanted: Raleigh Sports rear fender in “Coffee”

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looking for one Raleigh Sports rear fender in their coffee/metallic brown color. Must be in very nice shape. I’m looking for a pre ’77 variant only, with the white tail. PM or email if you have one.

A disclaimer here to the moderators and forum owners:

I know very well that I’m in ‘direct violation’ of the rules for posting a “wanted” post here on the Classic & Vintage forum.

Frankly though, as far as I’m concerned, I believe posts asking for 30 year-old parts do not belong on a wanted forum where the main requests are for STI shifters and Campy 10 speed cassettes. That’s akin to asking your local Cannondale dealer for a rod brake stirrup from a ‘45 Raleigh DL-1 roadster. (Edit: And I don't see any reason to shell out money for the privilige to post on a Wanted forum that is useless for the vintage crowd.)

...and I don’t care for snide remarks from the spandex crowd (“You ride 3-speeds?!”)

Delete this post if you want, but realize that by doing so, you’re simply hurting the vintage bicycle hobby.

No. Our wanted section is for members who've upgraded their memberships and paid for the privilege to do so.

I'll discuss with other mods and we will pm you.

I understand that - but is there any harm in also hosting a vintage-specific wanted forum (even if it must be for Contributing Members)?

If we have to become contributing members, we won't have any money left to buy vintage parts... :(

On one hand I agree that the Wanted forum isn't exactly the most popular forum on these boards. I've posted several threads there and have had some luck with responses, but with Vintage stuff I can see cudak888's point.

On the other hand, come on guys - it's $25 to upgrade. I did upgrade a few months back and quite happy I did. Without the support of its members, BF's may not exist for us to help each other with our C&V bikes.

As it is we have For Trade threads in nearly every forum now allowing non contributing members to post items for trade. This is already bending the rules a fair bit and I'd hate to see that go away because we try to take a mile after being given a few inches.

My .02 as just another member of the boards. For what its worth I'll keep my eyes open for you cudak888. Not that that is worth much as vintage Raleigh stuff doesn't end up on my porch like Schwinns show up on yours. :)

To be honest, I don't think deleting one post is hurting the hobby. And given the use many of us get out of this board, I don't see what the big deal about ponying up $25 is. I did it, and I don't recall ever having posted anything in the "for sale/wanted" section, except a couple of freebie frames.

That said, I wouldn't mind a vintage for sale/wanted sticky. Could limit postings to paying members. Mods would have to clean it up, I suppose, but they must be doing that to the for the sale board, as I'm sure non-members post there.

Your argument about vintage stuff could apply across the board. In other words, mountain biking could want their own FS thread, Fixies too, recumbents, whatever. Suppose it could get real messy real quick. It's not my board, so the mods and Joe can figure it out.

I've got a couple of nice 60s Raleigh Sports in the house right now, but they're way too nice to break up, and neither is coffee. I'll keep an eye open though, I find 5-10 sports models a year, pass on most of them. About what vintage?

I am not complaining about ponying up the $25 - my complaint is that the $25 does not give us access to a proper "Classic & Vintage"-specific For Sale & Wanted forum.

You see, if we don't pay, we can't post "Wanted" posts, and if we do, we're pigeonholed into a "Wanted" forum that's of little help to us.

I never visit either the For Sale or Wanted forums, and I'm sure many of the other Classic & Vintage folks don't either, for similar reasons: Fewer vintage folks go to the FS/W forum then they come here.

If we had a Vintage For Sale/Wanted forum, perhaps that might be different. I know that the C&V fellows here at Bike Forums have quite a few parts to sell, and I have Raleigh parts I'm interested in buying. Yet, I cannot bring myself to shell out $25, when I know that I'm not reaching all the C&V fellows possible.

As a result, I'm stuck with either:

*Oldroads.com English Roadsters Forum (Never anyone there)
*Schwinn's discussion forums (High-dollar musclebike parts are the norm here: "Take your Raleighs out of here and beat it" is the general attitude to Wanted posts)
*The "Trade" section here on Bikeforums.net (I'm running low on stuff to trade, and I've bought most of the LBS out of whatever is of interest to fellows like us)

So you see, the absense of a proper Classic & Vintage forum has made it quite difficult for me to find the rest of my parts. I have my doubts as to whether the normal FS/T section here at Bikeforums.net will be of any help to me - and I'm not willing to shell that $25 out on an experiment such as that.

I'll keep an eye open though, I find 5-10 sports models a year, pass on most of them. About what vintage?

The Coffee Sports I need to swap the rear fender on is a '74, but anything from '70-76 should do.

I appriciate your keeping an eye out for me. Thanks!

P.S.: My apologies for my initial uproar - I was a bit on edge when I first posted.
