I guess it depends on what your definition of "folk" is -- to some, it's just traditional folk, but to others it can include the urban folk or singer/songwriter genres.

At the blues end of folk you have great traditional artists like,

Mississipi John Hurt
Lightnin Slim Hopkins

and some fantastic contempory artists like,

Chris Smither
Harry Manx
Eric Bibb

and more along the lines of classic folk is Boo Hewerdine.
