Touring - Frame parts welded on tour!!!

This is the first ever (For me) actual account of someone getting their frame welded while on tour!!!
Guess what the frame material was???? It can't be!!

...But this tour was in the US. It probably wouldn't have been that hard to find someone using yellow pages, google, usenet groups etc. If this tour was in country where they lacked common language skills to locals, and the country lacked good communication infrastructure hmm...

To be accurate, the part that was welded was part of the seat on a recumbent not a frame tube.

There is one other story at CGOAB of a guy having a seat stay come loose from the seatlug ( steel frame) and having a gas station melt a big booger of brass on it and have it break again a few days later.

A pal of mine rode from Boston to Seattle this summer he broke a chainstay about 100s mile from my house. A muffler shop offered to weld a scab over the break and of course he nor they didn't know the chainstay was only .028 thick, so some lugnut burned a big hole through the chainstay. He called and I picked him up and took him to my house, I didn't have any chainstays around long enough for his bike so I brazed on rack mounts and bosses for a third water bottle on one of my early MTB frame s and sent him on his way. He hasn't posted his narrative yet on CGOAB

These claims of steel being repairable in BFE is 99% BS.

What is the average thickness of muffler tubing? Can't be much more thant .028. I ain't seen any mufflers that look 1/16", which is 060 ish.

Probably wasn't a tig, more likely a MIG with aluminum wire, if we are just talking probabilities.

Heck you can stick with the right aluminum electrode, and a electrode negative set-up. I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
