Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I may soon have a job offer for a company which is located in Huntington (West Long Island).
I am curious how the cycling is there. Are there good (paved) trails for road riding? How snowy does it get in Winter? Is Winter cycling totally out of the question?
Any personal (1st hand) info anyone has would be appreciated.

There's a reason I moved from LI to CA.
Huntington is a fairly large town. There are some rural areas and some very busy urban areas. I'm spoiled in CA, but I used to like riding route 25a. There are some nice country roads in Huntington Harbor and Lloyd Harbor.
Near by St. James/Setuaket has some nice rural roads, including a killer hill route through Moriches Road, Cordwood Path and Harborhill Road.
A nice long summer ride is through the North Fork wine country

nice riding area, lots of hills available around there. The LIE service road is good for riding which spans most of the island, i lived my entire life in Long Island so ask me whatever you need, i know all the shops, riding places, etc.

I'll keep that in mind...thanks. Funny...I thought you were a friend of mine playing a joke at first. One of my buds here at work uses "dnbowen" (his first initial, middle initial and last name) everywhere he goes online.
My big question is really more about the season....is cycling all year possible or is winter pretty much a "no way" issue? What about weather patterns? Lots of snow?

I live on LI and there is lots of great riding especially on the North Shore where Huntington is. I ride with the Long Island Bike Club which rides out of Westbury HS and often our rides take us to and around Huntington. There are a pretty good amount of hills in the area. There is also a bike club in Huntington and another that rides out of Bethpage Library about 10 miles away. Generally the roads are in pretty good shape and there are a lot of routes with light to moderate traffic. It can get snow on Long Island but gets cleared up pretty well. But it hasn't really snowed yet. So far starting in December (my beginning defination of winter) I have ridden every weekend with the club generally on 35 to 50 mile rides. Below is a link to the LIBC on the top on the gold bars are links to the other clubs on LI. Any questions just pm or email me.

LOL....when at first nobody was answering this thread, I found that web page and emailed with a woman named "Irma Klein" from the group yesterday. Apparently, she is the coordinator for the C rides.
