Touring - Camino De Santiago 206 Aug-sep

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO
Seeking riding partner(s) for 1,000 mile bicyle pilgrimage. Start in Lyon France about Aug. 20, 2006 and end in Santiago Spain about 28 days later. Twenty riding days, averaging 50 miles per day. Eight days of travel and rest. See the Spanish national bicycle race in Burgos Spain on Sept. 6. Half of the trip is in France, half in Spain. French pilgrimage trail begins in Le Puy en Velay.

COST OF TRIP
Estimated cost of the trip is $3,000. I plan on sleeping in the refugios along the route half of the trip. Cost for a refugio will not exceed $10 per night. Every other night, hotel lodging at about $40 per night.

RIDING SPEED
With panniers, the average day will be five hours of saddle time. Overall average rolling speed with be 10 mph. One-third of the trip will be in mountains, Pyranees; one-third in hilly terrain; one-third flat.

Just out of curiosity, are you doing this as a religious pilgrimage?

Check out the yahoo group: Santiago Biciclita (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Santiago_Bicicleta/), if you haven't allready.

I believe you have to join to view the archives + folders, but folks have posted a real wealth of information relevent to cyclists there. GPS waypoint data, elevation profiles etc. The list itself is pretty low traffic, but folks are very forthcoming with helpfull information after you join+introduce yourself. The archived messages offer ample good reading as well.

INDULGENCE

I did it last year, July - August 2005, from Germany to Finisterre. Went through Lyon as well, so you'll cover basically same route I did. Great time. Never found a hotel under €60. but I recommend camp grounds instead of hotels. Much better value, and you get a discount at campgrounds for having a "credencial".

My indulgence is hanging on my parents wall now, but the passport is still with me. Great great time indeed!
