ok so i wonder how often the images are refreshed. i can zoom into my rooftop so close that i can see the two poles i hang my hammock from in summer. so what if i painted a message on my roof? letters 4-5' tall would be clearly legible.

The pictures aren't refreshed often, in the area around where i live the pictures are 4 or 5 years old.

if you buy the premium version the images are refreshed regularly. Or maybe it't the commercial version.

It's surely worth it
parts of NYC that I can date range from 1-2 years old.

Maybe you can drop some equally well-reasoned science and help clear up that whole "brakes vs brakeless" thing?

It's always nice when someone remembers us mac users ain't it?
That thing is a definite time waster. Now all the need is someone to apply all the proper textures to the sides of the buildings...anyone got the rest of your life to spare?
The pics are old, I can date Houston to late 2002 and NYC is too looks like.

The plural of "mac" would be macs, with no apostrophe.

That's pure good news for me. I just got a 20" iMac about a month ago.
The bad news? That reminds me that Apple released the Intel-powered Macs two days ago, thus rendering my totally current and with-the-times iMac a bit more obsolete. The damn iMac with iSight computers were only a month and a half old when I bought mine..
Arrrggghhhh.

My parents ordered a 20" G5 iMac back in November (or whenever they came out) and it came last Thursday. At first I thought they should box it back up and cry foul, but after thinking about it for a while it probably makes sense for them to just keep it. The first generation of anything (especially Mac products) usually turns out a little wonky, and it will be a while before most non-Apple software is running natively on the Intel chips. Like, I doubt MS is going to be rushing to put out a new version of Office to take advantage of the blazing fast dual core intel power. Or whatever they're calling it.
I think I'm just going to shell out the $500 and just upgrade my single processor G4 tower to a dual processor and wait a year for this whole intel thing to settle down.

True, and the same can be said for any electronics. Software is the same too. yOu should always skip versions because the version with all new features usually has a lot of bugs and then the version for next year is mainly to fix those bugs with little new features. I use a crappy old powerbook G4 at work and it's painfully slow and I'm afraid that google earth would just kill my computer and end my work day early, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing.
Oh and this is fixed gear related because you should alway skip a generation of fixies?

****ing finally....this should keep me entertained and off task for at least two or three hours here at work.
good luck escaping having lost only a couple of hours... it killed me entire day yesterday.
make sure to check out the google earth community tags and unranked tags...
And just in case all you Mac users missed it in the Macworld Expo excitement, Garmin announced they would be making everything Mac-compatible starting with the Training Center software used by Forerunner & Edge series. Yippee, it's about time, and bless them for listening to customers.
Wangster, Google Earth runs fine on my 2 1/2 year old 1.25 G4 Powerbook.
I gave up on being p.o.'d when new Apple stuff appears only days after I made a purchase of the now old stuff...it isn't just Apple as it happens with everything electronics/computer related and you'd have to be a very rich person to always have fastest/bestest. If you're using a Mac then you're already ahead of the game anyway...

Somebody give me your coordinates, the go outside and hold your bike over your head. I'll take a screenshot, and post it here ;)
(yes I know the images are a couple of years old, but it's a fun fantasy anyway)

When google earth first came out some countries were complaining that it will people access to restricted airspace and let undesirables see top secret or secured sites. I don't know if google ever did censor it, but it'd be cool if they didn't and said f**k you to all those foreign countries.
they arent going to censor it. they didnt create the images, they are just collecting images that are public record, so they won't edit them to please the countries.

I have heard that India got really p!ssed off because locations of secret military bases were revealed to their "enemies"

thats good to hear, but at the same time this goes towards the whole 'big brother' issue. If we can get our hands on such detailed maps, the gov can def get real time video on anyone anywhere.... kinda shady when you think about it... price of technology I guess.
On a more important note, google earth won't work with 10.3.9 which sucks. I use a mac at work and this thing is a pos. I use pc at home so no problems there ;) If only I can afford a dual G5...

It runs a little slow on my 1.33 PB 12" with 1.25gig ram. But, if I really need speed, I'll just pop onto my Athlon 3200+ machine.
I really hate computers, rather the rapid development of computer technology, my computers are less than 2 years old and they are obsolete. I'm probably going to sell the PC and get either a new iMac (intel) or wait for an intel Mac Mini.
