Mountain Biking - "XC"???

Who developed the letters "XC"?

It's an age-old abbreviation. X for cross and C for country. It's been used in everything from running, skiing, mountain biking to aviation to distinguish between short and long events.

i'm gonna guess it'd probably be a lot more intensive than it would be worth to find out who first coined "XC" for cross country. Just my opinion

No, he just invented cross country itself. Someone else came up with the abbreviation--the same with the internet.

You guys are all wrong. It was invented by Pirates! "X" for where they buried their booty and "C" for the Dread Pirate Chris! No bloodier pirate ever sailed the Seven Seas than the Dread Pirate Chris! Any treasure marked with an XC was given a wide berth. Ye wanted to tramp many miles away for said treasure, else the Dread Pirate Chris would catch you and eat yer liver for dinner. Many a wayward soul was served at the Dread Pirate Chris's table, fer he loved his liver! Soon, "XC" came to stand for going all the way 'cross a country to avoid having yer liver eaten. And since the Pirates are an economical lot, they didn't want to abreivate it XAC so they saved money on ink by just writin' "XC"!

Why even to day, people do "XC" very fast to avoid gettin' their livers eaten!
