This subject has been touched on in some other threads. I'd like to know what everyone carries in their seat bags, or on the bike, either all the time, on commutes, or just training rides, in the way of tools, emergency supplies etc.

I always carry the basics: spare tube; patch kit; chain tool; tire boot; folding tool with hex, phillips, common screw drivers; spoke wrench; duct tape; spare change holder; spare chain links.

On my MTB I also have a small first aid kit; folding pliers; adjustable wrench.

On each bike an appropriate tire pump; water bottles.

On my commuter I usually have a rack pack with a cable lock, light cyclying jacket & vest; first aid kit, bungee cord and if a longer ride some type of energy food; spare blinkie.

Except for the rack pack, pumps and water, all this stuff fits in a seat bag which I have one on each bike, so I don't have to change anything when I go for a ride using a different bike.

Of course for longer day trips etc. there are other things that could be added, but that's about it for day to day riding.

Anything essential I've missed? Or could get rid of?

If any one is interested I have a bunch of brand new seat and frame wedge bags for sale. They are $10.00 shipped anywhere in the US. Email me for details and or pics of the bags. I also have a slightly used Cannondale "trunk" bag for sale email me for a pic and then make an offer.

What do people carry in their first aid kit.
Mine is pretty minimal, just to treat road rash. Antiseptic wipes and a 3" dressing, some wound closure tabs and a few small plasters.
Is anything missing ?

Servus! (the cool Bavarian way to say "hello")

Lessee, what do I lug around with me.....

Seatpack: Spoke Wrench, allen-wrench set, tire levers, patch kit, Carmex (lip balm of the gods), tube, small change.

Backpack: I like to be prepared for anything so I wear a backpack that holds my hydration system. In this pack I have my wet-weather gear, first-aid kit, pump, coil lock,
wallet, keys, "cell phone" (we call 'em "handies" here in Europe cause they're so....handy! :) ) a compass, something to write on and write with, and a energy bar or gel collection.

I catch alot of flak about the backpack, but I find that those without usually get caught with their fly down and ask me sheepishly for assistance. Ahh, vindication!

My first-aid kit is pretty extensive but I am a trained medic and like to have basic life-saving gear with me like my mouth-to-mouth mask. I also have a self-adhesive ACE style bandage and a "break and shake" cold compress. I have certain other accoutriments that make my life eaiser like superglue (don't ask) and a lightstick. One of the most often used items are latex medical gloves, which keep me from grinding chain grease and other grit into my wounds. Also, a safe way to render assistance to unknown riders and they also help to keep your hands really clean when you have to fumble with greasy bits like drivetrain. I like to have lots of cotton swabs handy for wound cleaning and also have ibuprofin for personal use when I have muscle pains/headaches. (Remember, if you are NOT an M.D., you are prohibited by LAW to give out ANY medication, even aspirin!) Other than that, I have the usual assortment of bandages, plasters, disinfectants, medical tape, and so forth.

Ranger. I think that law regarding non-prescription medication may not apply outside Germany. Ive never heard of it in the UK. In hospitals of course , there are rules forbiding non-doctors from issuing medication, but they are not law.

Hi Michael,

Don't know about here in Germany, but that is the way it is in the states. Even if it isn't a law (it is in Arizona), the American addiction with the casual lawsuit is nothing to mess with and I would hesitate no matter where I was. Sorry for the confusion, mate.
