I know there has been some intense discussion about BB width on older peugeots, but I can tell you what works on my 72' px-10 fixie.
It looks like with the original stronglight cranks and phil wood BB a nice chainline can be obtained by using a 111 BB. The BB needs to be shifted slightly to the drive side a couple mils, comes close to the stay but looks well balanced.

Proper bottom bracket sizing should be determined by your crank. I'm running a considerably wider spindle (120 or 119) on my PX fixie with a perfect chainline. The spindle is a Stronglight one original to the crank. Shifting the phil BB to the chainline side has the came effect as the wider spindle. There may also be fit difference between the phil spindle and the original stronglight spindle, depending on the Phil unit used. Different spindles can be used to place the crank differently; for instance, old editions of Sutherland's mention you can use a Sugino Mighty spindle (I believe, I'm posting from work and don't have mine handy) to move Stronglight cranks outwards, amoung several other workable combos (and some that do not work).

Having set up at least four Pugs as fixies (a PF, a UO, a PX, and a PR), I've never used a spindle that short; never had chainline problems. There are several solutions to getting a chainline correct and spindle width is merely one of the variables you deal with. Glad your solution worked.
