So I was coming up to a stop sign which a police officer stopped waiting to make a right turn. Everytime I come to this sign I go on the inside of the stopped cars and make my right inside of them. I don't really think about it. So, this time I ride past the cop on the right and turn inside of him. Still not thinking about it. About 50 feet on he catches up to me and tells me to pull over (I had never been pulled over on a bike before). He informs me that I was nearly t-boned. I am confused. I look around searching for the guy that nearly hit me. He gets frustrated, and says "didn't you see me turning". To which I responded "yes". He then makes some insinuation that I was wearing headphones...which was clearly untrue and that I nearly died.

I am not sure what to say at this point, seeing as that he really was no where even close to hitting me. So I revert to my typical mode of communicating with police officers and just start apologizing and agreeing with everything he says.

It seemed to work out. The moral is, if I am not going to obey traffic signs, its probably in my best interest to be sure that officers of the law are not the ones I am passing.

Some people become police officers because they want to help people and others do it because they are dicks and lack self esteam and feel the need to control others.

what intersection was this at? I'm constantly wondering when a cop is going to finally pull me over.

I was coming home from work today and saw a cop stopped at this light that isn't on a through street (Like it's shaped like a T and I'm going <- that way so I really never need to stop there). I decided to stop just in case he got pissy. Then the light turned green. Yup, that's my story.

The other night I was riding and I blazed through a stop light right infront of a cop coming toward me in the intersection. The cop slowed down and let me pass! What a nice guy. I love brooklyn.

Not saying the the cop wasn't a jerk, but no vehicle should ever pass another vehicle on the right ever for any reason, especially turning inside of them. It's illegal here anyway, though passing on the right is mighty popular here. It's just how I roll.

Not that I stick exclusively with it, but in such a situation I'd probably have gone in behind whoever was first in line, made it really obvious that I was jumping the line to the car behind, and followed the first car.

Alternately, if it was obvious they weren't going right away and I had time and space to get in there, I'd have gone right up in front of him, stopped directly in front, and made my turn first. I do that especially in front of cops, hoping to get into an argument about what the law actually says regarding bicycles, but because it's entirely reasonable, it's never happened.

But don't we all pass cars on the right at stoplights and such? I would find it nearly impossible not to.

And I just got pulled over the other night by a motorcycle cop. Scared the sh*t outta me! Thought I was getting run over. Guess that's cause I was wearing headphones, he didn't use sirens first(or I couldn't hear them?) I never listen to loudly and I feel like I can hear traffic, but it probably ain't the best idea. Also, no front light. He was cool enough. I did the same, agreed, apologized...but then I shot him. Unfortunatley, I used a bb gun, and he clubbed me down. It's pretty great that they have wifi in solitary...

if i'm turning right, i'll turn inside the radius of a car also making a right turn. if going straight, i agree with ieatrats. go around on the left.

as far as him saying you almost got t-boned, doesn't sound like a dick thing. sounds like he was trying to be nice and just saw risk where there was none. and the earphones, sure, maybe he was just more confused than he seemed. i dunno. it didn't sound like he was going to give you a citation (not from what you said), it just sounded like honest concern, even if unnecessary.

It's illegal here anyway, though passing on the right is mighty popular here. It's just how I roll.Except that nearly everywhere the law is that bicycles ride as far to the right as possible. Which means people are either passing you in this manner or you are passing them. It would be impossible to ride most streets without being in this position unless you take the lane.

It was the corner of chester street and first.

As for everything else. Yes. I am aware I was breaking laws. The point was it was stupid for me to do it right next to the cop. I didn't think he was an ass. I just thought he was confused... that and I thought the headphones comment was pretty asinine.

It seems like he really thought he was giving you good advice. Do him a favor and bring/send him a link to a safe biking site.

I wrecked at that intersection last year and almost got run over by a bus turning onto chester to head to the bus station....I hit a manhole cover that was wet and my front wheel slid out from under me not very much fun....
