Hey-
I've done some searching on this topic and might have missed something. I'm looking at upgrading from my damaged LX rear derrailleur to an XT. While I've been looking at them, I noticed that they are available in either a medium cage or long cage, with the medium cage being more expensive. I have heard these terms many times before, but am wondering what application each type is used for. Do you need the medium cage if you have a smaller-range cassette, or does it just offer crisper shifts, etc? I have a SRAM 7.0 with an 11-34 range.
Thanks for the input!!

it's wrap capacity. Some would say why use a longer cage than you need to get the job done. What capacity you need is figured by tooth difference between largest and smallest chainring plus tooth difference between largest and smallest rear cog. Current examples shift the same max rear cog regadless of wrap capacity. There are 2 independent rear derailer specs, one for wrap and the other for large cog.

For the 34T cassette you need the long cage. If you are putting it on yourself, Performance has the XT long cage on sale for $39.98.
