The Unibet.com team is currently in training camp at Calpe in Spain. The Belgian team compeleted rides of 150 km. Frank Vandenbroucke impressed Hilaire Van der Schueren "VDB astonished everyone. On the Col de Rat, he dictated the speed.

One will wait to what form he displays in racing. Belgian cycling needs a return to promise of VDB showed as it is known that the Belgian riders were not brilliant in traditional races in the Ardennes the last years.

VDB is the last Belgian winner of an Ardennes classic. It was in 1999. This year he failed for success in the famous doubled besides since he finished second of the Tour of Flanders. It should be noted that it finished in the top 10 of eight different traditional races. An undeniable sign of his versatility. With him to show that it can find its best level "If he spends a good winter, I am persuaded that it will find a very good level, perhaps not the level which it knew a few years ago but to 80 % of ihis best level. With Frank, one never knows but I hope for that it will return, it would be a good thing for him and the team. In spite of the fact that it remained a long time without riding, he remained very popular " declared Lucien Van Impe.

Is VDB's dog showing any form at the moment? Rover has been a bit quiet since he was busted for drugs a few years ago.

I really like VDB. A couple of years ago my brother-in-law had the number 1 bib at Flanders for USPS because George was sick, so with no set leader they did the numbers alphabetical. VDB was showing some form that year, I talked to Tony before the race and told him that if VDB won he had to have him autograph his number for me. Man he went off and said I sounded like all the teenage girls in Belgium.

VDB always looks good preseason, then something comes up and bam,
hospital or busted or he goes into hiding.

I think the US equivalent of this is-

"Ryan Leaf wowed coaches on the first day of mini-camp......."

Most Belgian cycling fans would sell your mother to witness the second coming of Merckx.......and they hope it's going to happen every year.

I call this the Darryl Strawberry syndrome. VDB is a very talented cycists. No one disputes that. What makes him a liability is that he is consistently unreliable and inconsistent in his committments both on and off the bike. Therefore no one has been successful in building a team around him or with him in it.

How many have tried?

Don't hold your breath.

VDB is one of the most naturally gifted cyclists of our era. If he could only commit himself to being a professional there is no limits to what he could achieve. Hey...he's human...so he has made many mistakes along the way. I don't make any excuses for the man...but if he could only get it together he would be so much fun to watch.
