patience grasshopper.... it is cold up there... are you sure you took off your long johns for the weigh in? Don't sweat it... you might stay that week for another week or two. no big deal. you are headed in the right direction and that is what counts...
Michael,
YOu only have 3 hours left... time to start chain smoking!!!!!! just keep one lit for the next 3 hours (it will help!!!!)

where'd you get that trainer. I am assuming you are referring to a bike mount that enables you to ride your bike similar in fashion to a spinner. i purchased a road bike in Nov but have been limited to riding due to winter weather.
Hi NC,
There are lots of devices called indoor trainers. Your bike mounts in them, and they provide resistance to your rear wheel so you can do an indoor stationary ride on your bike. Lots of avid cyclists use them to keep in shape in the winter and pros use them to warm up for events. There are different technologies for creating the resistance:
Wind: Cheapest, but noisy.
Magnetic: Allows you to adjust the resistance from a remote control, but not as realistic feeling as fluid.
Fluid: Most road like feel, but most expensive
I own a cycleops fluid 2 which is a decent fluid trainer, but I'm probably not fit enough to really be the best judge of quality.
Here is a link to a online retailer with lots of trainers: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/sub_cat.cfm?subcategory_id=4120
Also, there is another class of device called rollers. Rollers doen't really have much resistance, but they require you to balance your bike as you would when riding (and apparently if you don't have a nice even pedal stroke, you will fall). I've never been on rollers but I understand they take a bit of skill. Trainers hold your bike quite still/stationary, so no skill required, just a good way to get an indoor workout.

Current Weight: 248 lbs.
To Go: 48 lbs
This week: UP 3 lbs
This year: down 7 lbs
Since last May: down 20 lbs
I quit smoking a week ago today. Haven't had so much as a single drag off a cig since last Sunday. Unfortunately, I have been rewarding myself with food, and my weight actually went UP this week even though my exercise level stayed the same.
I do feel like quitting smoking is more important that the weight right now... I'll get the weight off after I get the monkey off my back.

koffee,
I really don't understand why you felt it necessary to go into a big explanation showing all the different things I am doing wrong here... if you refer back to my origional post i specificly said that I did not want dieting advice. I have absolutely no interest in your opinion on how to loose weight. If you are a certified nutritionalist, than that is the problem right there... that tells me that you have had formal education on the subject. If you don't understand what I mean by that, ask somebody.
Your dieting advice is a distraction that I will not allow. Thanks anyway.
Mike
Mike, your strenght and dedication will with no doubt get you to your goal, Please post your achievement here and I will be excited to see the results for you! whatever works for you is whatever works for you no matter what other's suggest or imply. Good luck!:) and ride hard!

this statement is so true.I doubt any nutritionist bothered to crack open an atkins book and read it with an open mind.
My daughter did the south beach diet, ( no carbs for 2 week and slowly introducing carbs again) she lost 40 in 3 months and now 6 months later she has not put one pound back even if she eat a regular amont of carbs everyday.. it does work for some people. It worked for my daughter. She even cheats and treats herself to mexican food and even Mc donalds sometimes ( 14 years old) and she has not put one pound back. Im not saying it works for all but I dont like hearing how it doesnt work at all.

I have a question regarding bikes. I weight 288 lbs and would like a road bike. I'm concerned about crushing it. What are you riding? Any problems with it?
I got down do 198lbs. now after being around 225lbs.-230lbs. for the last 6 years.
The heaviest I got was 245lbs. in 2002-2003.
Since July 2005 I started running, swimming and bicycling and do a lot of cardio-boxing kind of workouts.
I've been cross-training since November 7 days a week and went from 215lbs. at the beginning of December to 198lbs. today.
I think you should try to find time to workout as much as possible, cross-train so you can workout every day. Take a day off if you feel too tired every now and then, but try to workout at least 30 minutes a day.
Some days I manage to get in a workout before work and then after work too.
I'm fitting into clothes that I wouldn't have been able to wear just last Summer. :)

I will turn 30 in june, and on Jan 1st 2006 I weighed in at 282 pounds at 6'3" tall. I have been riding for about a year and a half and love it. Believe it or not, I am pretty good on the bike; I regularly do 30 - 40 mile rides both solo and with a local club. However... I am so sick and tired of barely keeping up in group rides because of my weight... if I were 200 pounds, I would be able to use my leg strength to blow everyone away. EVERYONE!!!!
This year I will eliminate 83 pounds of disgusting FAT from my body. I will weigh in every sunday morning, and post my results. On 01/08/2006 I weighed in at 272.4 (9.6 lbs loss for first week) I'm not really excited about loosing that much because that was just the normal big drop when starting a diet...
I am not looking for advice or even support, I just want to be able to publicly post my results each week. If I gain a pound I will have to deal with the the unpleasant task of posting it... Everyone will know.
If you ARE going to loose a significant amount of weight this year, I encourage you to use this thread to post your own numbers. If you do this, the only thing I ask is that you stay 100% commited to posting your weekly results every Sunday morning. This is not a social event, nor is it a game. My future is in my hands... now is the time.

9.6 down, 73.4 to go.
You go dude. But don't take it so seriously. Have FUN. And go easy on those other riders when you start getting thin you animal.
I just wanted to say good luck. I lost 50 and am very happy. However, riding is addicting and once you hit your target weight you'll be in the boat I'm in now, trying to keep weight on. It's a pain in the ass(in a good way).
I love seeing people trying to make a positive change in their life. I'll be following your progress and rooting for you guys.
Oh, and my advice? F***in ride!
Hey everyone, I'd like to get in on this too.
I started off 2006 at 6'0", 278 pounds. I don't have a set target weight, I figure I'll know it when I get there. Right now I'm eating smaller meals and spacing my meals and snacks so that I don't get hungry. I've also limited my eating out to once or twice a week, and am picking relatively good choices (no pizza, mcdonalds, steakhouses, etc). Lean Cuisine type meals work well for me, you can take them to work and have something hot to eat without having to go to a restaurant.
I can't wait for the weather to warm up so that I can have an easier time getting my exercising kicked into high gear.
I've been weighing in on Mondays, I'll switch to Sundays to match the group. I agree with Koffee that it's probably not the best thing to do to weigh yourself every week, but I need to see the scale going the right direction (or at least not too far in the wrong direction) to keep myself focused.
I'll keep a log of my weight loss in my sig. As of last weigh in:
02/06/06 - 259
Thanks, Sam

I have a question regarding bikes. I weight 288 lbs and would like a road bike. I'm concerned about crushing it. What are you riding? Any problems with it?
I have a giant TCR2 it just about all carbon (minus the stem, bars and stear tube) and it has held up fine. the one thing you will crush is a crappy set of wheels. do some searches on recomended wheels for your weight. I have the mavic kysirium elite, and think they are perfect, but you do not have to spend quite that much. The average set of wheels that come with road bikes today are not very practicle... especially for someone like you. they are built based on cost and weight. you don't need the lightest wheels, you need the strongest ones!
let me know if you have any more questions.... tommorows weigh in should be a good one!!!

?? Considering that it was started in order for people to share their weight loss progress every single week, no, I don't think it's fair to expect that it will end any time soon. I might not think that extrinsic motivation is particularly helpful for making changes in the long term, but clearly the OP does and that's his prerogative.

Earlier in the thread people stated - that people with a formal education do not know what they are talking about. I thought bashing nutritionists is a brash thing to do. There was no dialogue either, which was weird. I hope they have dialogue with some one about these issues- nutrition and fitness. Some people just came out and said nutritionists - suck. Well, I think they suck. :) I should add, I am not a nutritionist. But I know some socially. This week I am going to give them a good hug. :D

You might be interested in this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=166201) that the OP started in order to address the "educated nutritionist" issue away from his "shame me for failure" thread. It's up to 21 pages, quite a dialogue, though both the OP and the nutritionist dropped out early. ;)

nice car..
a couple of quick points...
Atkins is not a no carb diet, its a low carb diet, or a restricted carb diet, or a controlled carb diet... ie. you eat carbs, but you are judicious in choosing your carbs, you eat fruits and vegetables that are low in sugar/starch... and there are a lot of them! I probably eat more vegetables now than ever before..
And yes, Dr. A died prematurely, he slipped on some ice and cracked his head open. Didn't have much to do with his diet. But while we're at it, didn't Jim Fixx, Dr. Pritikin, and the powerbar inventors all meet their maker prematurely?
