didn't Jim Fixx, Dr. Pritikin, and the powerbar inventors all meet their maker prematurely?
Jim Fixx had heart disease well before he became a runner. Prior to that he was essentially a couch potato eating too much saturated fat and, as a result, ended up with numerous clogged arteries. He also refused medical treatment.

eating too much fat along with carbohydrates, you mean.... it's been proven endlessly that sat. fat without high carbs is harmless.
anyway, the point is that one person's medical history is meaningless... Mr. Fixx, Mr. Pritikin, Dr, Atkins, you, me....

No, I mean eating too much saturated fat. The overwhelming evidence reveals that the consumption of too much saturated fat contributes to heart disease. Of course, eating too much of anything will contribute to obesity which doesn't help one's heart either. In any event, Jim Fixx already had several heart attacks, ignored the warning signs and eventually died of a heart attack. The notion that he died because he ate too many carbs is incorrect, and typically expoused by the Atkins fanatics.

ah, here we go again. there is no evidence conclusively showing sat. fat has anything to do with heart disease. all we have is 30 odd years of poorly interpreted studies and creative guesswork.
edit: btw, you're right about Fixx, he had a bad family history and ignored his doctors, and ignored his own heart attacks just prior to his death. Just guessing, but I'd bet he followed a high carb diet and that wasnt helping things much either!

Sure there is. Just ask any cardiologist who they're giving bypass and angioplasties to. Hint: Its not lifetime runners, cyclists, or vegetarians.

Good luck, just keep at it. I lost 40 lbs last year, and have kept it off well, just riding, and eating low-fat. Don't get discouraged, just keep riding. I was lucky to meet up with some very experienced riders, who have taken me under their wings. I have gone from worrying about dieting and weight, to worrying about keeping up with them.

Weight: 54.25 lbs above target weight
Last Two Weeks: down 3.25 lbs
This year: down 1.25 lbs
This reflects improved eating habits. I was out of town the past couple of weeks, staying with someone who is very good at maintaining a healthy weight. I paid attention, and I'm going to continue the healthy habits.
I actually exercised less there than I do at home, although I did get some aerobic exercise (mostly walking) and I also did a bunch of stretching (which is another good habit I want to keep).

I just found this thread, and I'm in! I started my weight loss last May. Started at 246. This morning I weighed in at 207. I haven't been on any particular diet. Just trying to be smart about what I eat, both selection and portion size. And I exercised a lot. 95% road cylcling, a little jogging, and some stair climbing. I will weigh-in every Sunday. My goal is to get down to 170....

Great thread - I will start posting my numbers come this sunday.
Seeing 300 on the scale really hit me, I started walking and doing a bit of jogging, though that added some unwanted pain to my knees.
I'm down to around 292 now, I was down to 235 summer 2004 (on Atkins actually).
I loved eating low carb, I really felt a ton of energy, my cholesterol was great, though my downfall was cutting out all food temptation completely, after far too many times eating out and chinese takeout, I was back to my original weight (287) and then some.. (305).
My goal is to get out of my 44" pants, and back into my 36", wear and XL shirt without a problem and to go skydiving by the end of summer (max weight is 240).
I'm not going to cut the carbs like I did in the past, but more power to you for doing it.

You do a low carb diet, and you will always have the weight problem.
...In fact, I'm doing a wellness seminar for the government building I work in today, so this will be my warm up...
Koffee? My Hero? A Government Worker?? Say it ain't so! :)
What has worked for me, and I'm paraphrasing here:
I lose weight, not by good bike rides, but for good bike rides.
Today, I took a hilly two mile walk at lunch with a coworker in tow. Tomorrow, I am going again, with a different coworker. (Hopefully I will have a pedestrian train by the end of the month.) I can't easily ride my bike at lunch, but the walking is easy, and will contribute to little less weight on my next ride. Everything I do has the focus of making the next uphill grind spin a little better.

Still waiting on getting the funds together to order my bike next week.. so in the meantime it is light walking/pushups/situps.
I didn't really capture numbers up till now.. but I started at around 305 at the beginning of the year.

I thought for sure that pedaling 400 miles in 5 days would have made it impossible for me to do anything but loose weight, but I was wrong!!! hey mike, I wouldnt feel too bad, you probably just gained some water weight due to the crap (ie. excess carbs) you were eating. that will fall by the wayside pretty quick after you get back to your low carb regimen. From my own experience with off the wagon excursions, I'd say give it a week or two...

April, May and June is 3 months. June being the only one he's been cycling. 2 pounds a week doesn't seem unreasonable for someone starting out in their 290s.
