Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - clip-on rear blinky recommendations

so, i lost my favorite red blinky light somehow, and it looks like it's not made anymore, so i'm turning to you, my fellow forum-members, for assistance in finding a replacement.

i THINK the one i had was a cateye and it had two great features; the clip that held it on was pretty robust (although not robust enough apparently), and the switch was activated by pressing the bottom of the whole light assembly. it wasn't some fiddly little button that you couldn't get to with gloves on.

i want something with a good clip, so i cna take it on and off my bag, clip it to my pants or my collar, and then clip it back on my bag again, and not have to worry about it falling off, and i LOVED the switch on my old. it was genius design.

so, whatcha got?

i had a cateye similar to that, but it had a clip for my bag instead of the part for your seat tube. someone stole it though.

shants has some fancy-smancy light that has a MAGNET you have to use to turn it on and off.

it's the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

that being said, i use the cheap $5 on sale blinkys from performance, 'cause I seem to go through about two of them a month.

It's pretty much industry standard.

Yeah, those two blinkies you linked to are ugly as sin. They look like evil mutant pods.

I am EXTREMELY loyal to my planet bike blinky. Pleasing smooth curves, a raised button that, for me, is easy to find and press, bright. Partial charity proceeds, etc.

i did chack that one out, but it didn't seem like the clip would hold onto the buckle-strap on my bag very well (but i'm willing to be convinced).

^yes, you can clip the planet bike blinky to your bag. i have 2 of em. they have a decent plastic clip and an extra plastic lip to prevent it from sliding off your bag/pants/belt. i rock one on my seatpost and one on my bag. they're only like $6 and come with batteries. . . i didn't know about the charity thing- thats cool.

i've been using this one for a couple months, and i think it's pretty good. the on/off button does seem like it'd be kind of a pain, but i've had no problem with it, even with my huge and obnoxious gloves.

i have a planetbike blinky that serves me well. its on this page (http://www.planetbike.com/rearlights.html#), third one down (the brt 7). the clip is decent, its bright, there are only two settings though, which isn't that big of a deal anyways. it comes with the mounting bracket for your seatpost too, and clips in/out really easy. my only complaint is how easily it can come apart if you drop/hit it, but that hasn't happened yet while riding. also good for clipping on you bag, which is what i did for a while.

My new blinkie is also a Planet Bike. I dig it. Works well, comes with batteries, and was cheap.

+1. i have this same light and love it...as much as you should love a red blinkie anyways. i have some friends who go over the top with their blinkie love but i won't go into that here.

that part is really important for me.

I just got that cheap one from perfomance...and the GF just got the MARS 3.0 light. The cheap ass one has a decent seat tube anchor thing and clips on really well to bags. But in all honesty i think you should judge it on whether or not it has the Knight Rider, Kit setting...

Clip works fine.
you push the entire bottom bit to turn it on and switch modes. The on/off button is actually inside the housing and you have to flex the housing to make it work. sounds weird but it works.
cheap.

I have this one from Nashbar. It is about the size of a pager, has a clip like a pager and clips to the small strap on my seat bag. It has 5 led's and 5 different flash patterns. It's bright. The button is a little small and each push cycles through the whole range of flash patterns before reaching the off position. It was 2 dollars more when I got mine. . . . that's the way my luck usually runs :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I had this one for about 9 months before the clip on the back side of the light broke. Now it's held together by scotch tape (feh) and lives on my desk. The $3 veloswap zefal piece-o-crap from many years ago is back on my bike. And I don't care if anyone steals it-- 'cause the stupid worm tension screw is made of plastic and nearly stripped.

*to Blackburn's credit, they've promised to backorder a new clip and ship it to me.

FYI most cat-eyes can be clipped on. All their lights used to come with an optional clip attachment, now I think just the really expensive ones do. For those lights that don't, you can buy just the clip for cheap. I also found that friends always had one lying around when I needed one; most people never used them and just tossed 'em in a draw.

That said I've been using the VistaLite cheap rears for a while. Inexpensive with a very strong clip and pretty bright. Waterproof, unlike some other lights that just wouldn't work well when it was raining (cheap cateyes for one).

Handily for me, you can drop them a lot before they'll break, as they're chunky and simple. Size makes 'em hard to loose and they take two AA batteries which you can find anywhere when your light goes dead.

almost forgot: another disadvantage of the Blackburn Mars 3.0 is that it requires a fairly tiny screwdriver to change the batteries. Not that you'll be doing that very often, but...

works when its wet. i havent had any problems with it thus far.

I use this one and its pretty sweet...super bright and the button are really easy to use in my opinion

I got my red blinkie for $0.99 at the 99 cent store a few years ago. I picked up a few of them and they've been working great.....can't complain for a buck.

Another vote for the Planet Bike BRT-3. Pretty burly, water-resistant, and can clip onto your bag or bike.

I have one of these and it works fine. I clip it to the back of my Timbuk2.

I do. It's really bright, has good battery life, and it's survived downpours. I mounted it on my seat tube between the seat post clamp and the top tube. Really easy to clip in and out, except if the clip gets gunky. It was pretty cheap if i remember correctly - under $15.

they need to make a light with a huge safety pin on the back. i can't keep 'em attached to the back of my bag for the life of me. that, and i've pretty much given up on them. make me one with a not-comin'-undone clippy thing and i'm sold.
