Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Cool bike racks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I find that most bike racks tend to be very poorly designed, and dont allow for very safe lock-ups if you use them the way they were intended. Most of the time Id rather find a parking meter than use em. But here are some really neat ones here in philly. I saw one the other day that was a sculpture of a giant chainring, and a piece of chain around it, and attached to the ground, I meant to take a picture of it on the way back but forgot. Later on down the same street I saw this one that looks like a devil or bull riding a bike( sorry for the REALLY ****ty pic.. but I broke my camera, and my phones camera does weird **** sometimes.. .but notice the horns on the front of the "Devil")... anyone else have pics of interesting racks?
That's some hella rake on that bike insignia.

i remember when i was looking at colleges a few years back, a student at bridgeport university in conneticuit had designed a bike rack that was supposed to circle around a tree, and it was a tubular frame of abstract forms of people sitting down, and you parked your bikes in between the peoples' legs. I'll see if i can find a picture.

there is this mall by me that has these pod looking things that come down over your bike so it's completely covered and out of view. pretty rad but that's the only place i've ever seen them.

Yeah, Ive heard of covered "docking stations" like that... never seen one though. Metallo.. those bike racks are really cool! could you post/send me a bigger pic of that second one so I can read what it says? I heard that Upenn students are designing new racks to replace the ones around campus... ill see if I can find where I read that.

Heres one article (http://www.upenn.edu/pennnews/current/2005/111705/research.html)
We have the "pods" at my train station, but people will lock their bikes there
and NEVER move them I mean never*. I got luck and scored one and used it
everyday, but did keep locked even when I wasn't there (which was wrong).
I got in trouble and now yet another un-ridden bike is locked in there.
*As a test I strategically put a leaf on top of the bikes' rim and almost 3
months later not one of the 4 leaves have moved. Arrgh

THats cool... Im just too curious for my own good sometimes. ANd about those pods, yeah, I can see availability as a huge problem. WHen you have an option as nice as that in limited supplies It would be hard to resist "reserving" it for yourself. I cant believe that anyone would be willing to put up enough money to build enough of them in any one place to meet demands.
