My ski tracks are gone and the fire roads are slush so today I took my Basso Loto for a 45 mile spin around Oslo, Norway. Strange january this should be the deepest of the nordic winter with a meter of snow and minus 10 to 15 celsius. Instead it is 10 plus and no more snow. Nice to have a decent (and fast)winter bike though. (Steel and DA 8 speed, conti GP 300)

Someone called off winter around the birthplace of organized American skiing as well, plodderslusk. The trails near the US Ski Hall of Fame, in Ishpeming, MI, have much less than normal snow amounts. Many of the trails in the UP are not getting groomed yet. It is sad for winter lovers, some of the loppets may get called off for lack of snowcover..
It was 6 below 0 F with a good snow pack a month ago. Last friday I received my Surly Pugsley snow bike and we have no snow and 60 degrees. :(
I think they mentioned the possibility of snow flurries tomorrow but right now it's a rainey 54 degrees in New York.
The same thing up in Rhode Island. 52f and no winter.
rain all day... but changing to snow tonight.. they say we could see 2-4inches.. ill believe it when i see it.. anything but rain.. im sick of rain.. the way it's going we'll be cutting grass again before you know it...
same thing in canada...we got our first real snow that lasted more than 2 days about a week ago...i miss snow, cause i just started getting into snowboarding, and now i need it...o well im going tomorow anyways, snow or no snow haha
steve
Inch of snow here today, windy as a VC preacher too. But it's supposed to be back to rain by Monday evening or so.

We have some pretty good skiing still from the last snowfall. We've been lucky because we seem to be getting an inch or so refresh every week. City of Lakes Loppet was called of last year!
Whoa! Temperature dropped 18 degrees since I posted that last message. Maybe we'll see a little bit of winter after all.

We skipped over winter also here in Western Washington. Twenty-six straight days of rain. Temperatures in the mid to upper 40's. Looks like it will be six months of rainy spring weather. I am not complaining, I would rather ride in the rain than in the snow.

You just had to wait a few hours.
50+ºF and clear Monday -> mid 50s with dense fog all day Friday -> 50s and pouring Saturday -> 3+ inches of snow on the ground Sunday morning
Winter's back, and it's not happy.

Eight feet of new snow at Mount Baker ski area in Washington state in the last week.
old man winter's way of saying, 'can you feel me now!'
I just want to set the "outside" thermostat to any even temperature.
Where is that located?
We've had a mild winter here in Central Ohio, too. And I just killed the chance of winter returning here. I bought a pair of Lake MXZ 301 MTB Shoes (http://www.lakecycling.com/winter.html) at Performance. I had been waiting for a coupon, and got a 10% off one.
Although I miss using my cold weather gear, I don't miss paying the wacko gas bills it would have taken to keep my home warm (or even above freezing) when it's <10F day after day.

personally, I'll take all the global warming I can get
The Russians are getting all the winter weather ... Google up "russia cold" in the news ... -22 F for a high temp in Moscow? Chance of breaking the all time low of -42F in Moscow?
Not that you can ski much in those temps.

Toronto...CANADA 11 degrees Celcius today ..... in JAN?!!! rode ...no glove jacket open..... twisted. I haven't even had to build my winter fenders this year. Couple weeks ago took the kids skating ice was soft. Plodderslusk...I hear the pain, OSLO should be frozen solid for three more months....how very disappointing. It'll come back though I hope.

Did you tune up the lawnmower yesterday? :)
i didnt go quite that far, but I did hedge my bet that I wouldn't need it anymore this year and didn't bother having the snow blower repaired when it choked on ice chunks in the last storm.... so i'm in manual mode, shoveled the first 5 inches and am watching the rest still comming down.. latest report says 5-10" WEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT'S BACK!!!!!!!!
somewhat
Maximum Temperature F (C) -27.0 (-32.8)
Minimum Temperature F (C) -36.0 (-37.8)
Yeah, THAT will test your shoe covers !!

Damm it you get to have all the fun. Just 2" up here. :(
fun ended at about 6 inches.. but its already warming up and melting .. will be slush in no time.. can't win here.. no base.. warm ground..
Yep still no winter. I did get some skiing in but that was weeks ago. As for last year's loppet, it was definately a go, I was stuck in Uptown last year in the midst of a lot of lycra wearing dudes. I almost felt I was in the Tour de France.
I want snow, it's the cold I can't stand.
here in Montreal, it used to be -15 in january and as low as -35 (rare, for a couple of days) in the past. I read on the net that we used to get 350 cm of snow every year in the 1970s, but we only got about 150cm last year and below 200cm in average for the past years. Last winter, we had a relatively warm one, snow melting in the very first days of february. This year, the same thing is happening. The only difference is that it's happening during the month of january!!! as a result, we get snow, then it melts and we get rain, then snow again and everything freezes once more. The icerinks are not really of good quality and I don't even have to wear my winter coat anymore. The temperatures have been around 0 C I would say for the past month...what's gonna february be like??? I hate it!
As a sidenote, since 1990, Canada has increased it's CO2 emissions of some 25%. Because we have to lower our emission of some 10% from the 1990 level with Kyoto, that becomes a 35% decrease that we have to do before the end of Kyoto (I think it's in 2010, I don't remember). HOW THE HECK ARE WE GOING TO DO THAT???? Certainly not with a brand new conservative government who's stuck with Kyoto because it doesn't approve it but can't back down from the liberal engagement...They certainly won't try to do anything more.
A bigger problem is the emergence of China, India and other under-developped countries that have and will continue to have a sustained growth in their economy without considering the environmental impact they have when taking economic decisions. We have never considered the ecological costs of our actions and are now paying the price. What's it going to be like in a century? Hunters in the North of Quebec are relating that they're having problems to seek for food and territories to hunt. They are having serious troubles because of the ice that usually covers the rivers, bays and artic ocean is forming itself a lot later in winter and melting a lot sooner. Last summer, they have recorded never-seen-before high temperatures, as hot as in Florida or California. Experts are saying that their situation is a living laboratory for predicting the global climate changes in the years to come. They say that in a century, Europe will be covered of snow during winter, recording temperatures similar to the ones we had some 10 years ago, and that Canada and the US will record winter temp. as high as the ones in Europe! Can you imagine that, a winter without snow? without hockey, not feeling cold air coming down your throat and entering into your lungs anymore? Telling your grandson what snow looks and feels like, only being able to give him a small idea of it by showing him pictures of you laying down on the ground doing snow angels, doing snowmen,...??? I was studying in Hungary last year, and in one of my courses, my teacher told us how the Danube (the river that passes through the city) used to be completely frozen when the king of Hungary was crowned on the river in the 16th century? I was there untill christmas and the temperature never went below 0 C, it snowed once for about 30 minutes and you could count the snowflakes falling from the sky, see them disapear as soon as it touched the pavement. The river was certainly far from being frozen (and a king far from being crowned, but that's an other issue :P) This year an last year also, Italy and France (from what I know) have been covered by snow more than once, resulting in the death of many drivers on the roads.
My point is, if you look in the past, a lot of changes have occured and were inevitable. But the intensity of those changes were way lower that now and not necessarily caused by human activity. There's a chance that if we don't do anything life will go on w/o us, but I'd rather not take that chance knowing I could have done something as stupid as going to school by public transportation or by bike. The mass in the society has never been this educated yet we don't do anything different than before. We have evolved, growned, expanded but perhaps not the way we should have...
Anyways, I just wanted to expose my point of vue, share my frustration of seing the world evolving not quite in the direction that insures what seems for some people (including myself) continuity for the Earth, the environment as a whole (where we have a definded place and a role, not the control).

Bleh! About a dozen!
Russia is in a deep freeze, we're almost tropical here in MN.
it aint over yet.. we will have blizzards in april... somebody shoot the groundhog..
I had 51 degrees on the tempmometer today here in wisconsin. The roads are sandy as a beach but warm enough to ride with care. Tomorrows weather is forecasted to be the same.Tempmometer- device used to measure temperature. I might be a redneck.
I've been riding in shorts, tshirt, and a windbreaker jacket all day today in Minneapolis...
Ok, I wasn't riding all day, but this afternoon on the way to work I wore the fingerless gloves and light socks, on the way home I put on another layer of socks and gloves with fingers... I thought I'd need armwarmers both times, but I was wrong and took them off...
We've had to postpone tomorrow's 15th Annual Human Powered Ice Vehicle World Championships.
Some of the best ice we've ever had, but it's under a couple of inches of water.
Roger's lake in Mendota MN, just South of St Paul.

'cager' picture from Sunday's outing....
53 High today here, with 60% snow tomorrow. We'll see about that. Winter can't make up it's mind.
The thing I dislike about the warmer weather here is that the ticks come alive again and I start picking them off the dog again. I hate that.
