Touring - 7 to 9 spd (chain issue)

I have toured for many years on my good old bike equipped with a 7 speed cassette. The bike is still in pretty good shape. I have never broke a chain on this bike but I take very good care of it. A couple of years ago I decided it was time for a new bike so I bought one equipped with a 9 speed cassette. While touring on this new bike I have broken two different 9 speed chains. I know that the 9 speed chain is a little narrower but is this common with the 9 speed setup? Thanks

I believe there is a greater chance of snapping narrow chains. Avoid hollow lightweight chains? I run 7, 8. I avoid 9 but may just be paranoid (lightweight rider).
One reason is I do trials riding on apt size rock cliffs over the ocean. A snapped chain would be really bad news.
I have yet to purchase ($$) and I have to wait 'till I wear the current wears out-

Where can you get them? I have them on three of my bikes. they are the best shifting chains I have ever owned.

I went from a 7 to 10 spd cassette on my road bike and I snapped a Shimano 10 spd chain twice in 3 weeks.(neither break was at the install pin) I went to the Wipperman chain and it has been fine for 1900 miles so far. On my touring bike and MTB I use 8 spd and have only worn chains out , never broken any.

I bought them from bikenashbar, but last time I checked they stopped selling them.

Are you guys looking for Wipperman chains as i can get them if you are struggling to get them in the states??
