well this frame is a 53cm and i'm not sure if i want to build it up. the parts are getting too expensive. i'm not sure if i need 3 px10's, but anyways i cleaned it up today. doesnt have the nervex pros, but i guess its maybe a 73 or 74? what do you guys think?

overall its in great shape. i wish i could get parts w/o bidding.

maybe i'll place it on craigslist, who knows. build, sell or trade?

'72 or '73, '74's that came to the shop new had nervex, at least on the West Coast.

Agreed w/no 6... the location of the Reynolds sticker is usually another clue... here it's on the seat tube, they switched in @ 1974 to the downtube (as usual to the best of my knowledge, the switchover may not have been that smooth. Dating Peugeots, short of the original reciept, is part guesswork). In 73 there was both the "E" model (steeper geometry, nervex pros) and the regular PX (plain lugs). 72 or 3, my semi-edumacated guesstimate.

It's just my size. Does it have a good headset and bottom bracket?

yeah the headset and bottombracket are both stronglight. they seem good. i have enough parts i think to make another bike, but....i dont know. i think i'm tired.

i also think i found a better way to clean up the frame. this one was weathered and was starting to look its age. it cleaned up nicely. it had a lot of paint defects. i tried a new maguires cleaner andi'm happier than the zymol. i'll post pix of the bottle if anyone is interested. i orig. said that the zymol worked better than the first magui. but the new one cleaned up the frame nicely. i have a little bit more to clean up, got lazy and will report back on the new technique.

I'd make you an offer if it wasn't tax time. You could build it as a fixed gear or single speed. They present some new and different challenges. I just finished a single speed mtb and I really enjoyed building it. It's also the only bike I've been riding lately.

Looks like my '73 but appears to be in better condition. I'd consider selling my frame and buying yours if the offer was right ;) and would definitely like more info on the product you used to clean yours up!

agree with the other best guesses as far as date, but have you tried to contact the manufacturer. i have had success when trying to date a vintage bike by contacting the manufacturer and providing the serial number.

here are the pix of the products i used to clean up the frames.maguires gold car wash is not pictured

the blue bottle is the wax cleaner- ZYMOL, just some elbow grease and time. i also alternated between the small red bottle, also a wax cleaner made by maguires. i think that the maguires works better. more contamination came off the frame. i only went over the peugeot decals not reynolds as they seem fragile. the peugeot stickers were stained with black ink, mold somethink i wasnt so sure, but with time they cleaned up nice.

i dont have any wax on the frame yet. i'll clean a little more then place the wax. i tend to ride in the rain and by the ocean so a good coat over most parts will be a spendid idea.

another product i like and you may want to try it first, but spot test- is the magic eraser by clorox (i used the target brand) this stuff cleaned up the bar tape on my 66 (see thread) really nice. i aslo used it on the back of the decal on the seat tube and took a lot of junk off. so i used it on the entire decal and removed a lot of surface marks off, so far no discoloration. (thanks for the suggestion from the 66px10 thread)
my tape was white, so if you have black tape or colored, spot test on an old piece

i also tried a new product the clay bar kit. essentailly clay w/ a wax cleaner and detailer. you spray the detailer on and pass the clay over, back and forth, very lightly until the surface contamintion comes off, you will also feel that the paint becomes smooth, like when you apply wax.it removed tar and other surface contamination

i was very careful to avoid removing any patina. i think that the guys in the old days cleaned their bikes with care, so i dont know what was patina and what was negligence, but when the time comes to sell it, that scratch now becomes patina.

for chrome i think that the semichrome works the best for polishing, not removing rust. the turtle brand sucked, what do you expect for a buck fidy. but i guess for a daily cleaner maybe its ok.

for the rims i liked the eagle one (silver can) cause its like a cotton presoaked, so you just tear some off and start cleaning, wait until it becomes black and remove quickly, actually buff.

On the subject of cleanup, any suggestions for removing a bike license sticker without damaging the underlying paint too severely? (It gets worse ... mine is right smack over the Reynolds 531 decal. :( )

This is assuming a peel and stick type license, but I have had good luck with using a hair dryer and a new single edge razor blade or exacto knife. Heat the sticker and use the blade to gently lift the sticker. I have done this without any damage to paint underneath, but with your 531 decal under the license, I don't know if this is feasible. Typically used a light degreaser after to remove the residue. Then use Maguire's cleaner to finish the job. You may want to consider obtaining a replacement 531 decal. Check with mswantak for those. (shameless plug)

ouch, i'm looking for a way also. those stickers are on pretty good, but im sure there is a way. i'll do more research on the subject. i have a bike sticker, where the bike was purchased on my seattube, the problem is that now no lettering is visible, only a foil type sticker remains. it actually looks ugly. so im going to try that blow dryer and see how it turns out

John,
I'd leave it alone until such time as you need to repaint frame and replace
the reynolds sticker.
Blow dryer might work in that heat doesn't seem to have any adverse effects
on waterslide decals.
