Mountain Biking - '01 Judy vs '03 Skareb Comp?

I have been test riding bikes like crazy trying to determine my next ride. I finally decided on the Giant XTC 2. Well I figured now it was no problem just go get the bike. Unfortunately my LBS threw me another curve. They just built up a '03 XTC 2 frame in my size that was special ordered but never picked up. It has XT front and rear derailliers, LX shifters, Avid SD5 brakes, LX hollowtech cranks, time pedals and the remain components basically like a factory XTC. They have it priced exactly the same as the factory bike. The only thing holding me back from jumping on this deal is the built bike has the top of the line Judy from '01. I'm not sure of the exact model, but the salesman refered to it as a race model with 95mm or travel. I only found a '00 Race Judy so maybe it isn't even a '01. Would I be better off with the new Skareb Comp and just upgrade the derailliers (which I figure is cheaper than a nice shock) or is the Judy comparable enough that I should jump on the built bike they have?

Go with the Skareb Comp. Stiffer, newer tech, lighter.

Judy's are crap, there you have it short and sweet.

i agree, the 01 Judy Race was a good fork but it'd be next to impossible to find parts for anymore. But i didnt like the feel much of the skared that i rode. So if i were you i'd do the tried and tested try them out and see which one you like

I would turn you away from the skareb comp, they are flimsy as hell and when we got our epic up here I took it on a xc ride and the tiny reverse arch cracked off on one side of the fork. I did hear though that when they were shipped, they had the forks turned around in the box which shouldent be done on manitou reverse arch forks. It may have cracked then because we didnt notice the crack until we let a few other people use the bike and they brought it back and the owner noticed that the arch was cracked. The skarebs look really flimsy though, and thats why I wouldent get one. The 2K1 judy is a fine fork.

I think I am going to take my chances with the Judy. Considering I will get better cranks, shifters, brakes, pedals and tires with only what appears to be a slight down grade in forks it just makes sense. Thanks to all who replied.

Good choice! Not only on the fork but on the XTC. Enjoy it :) I love mine!

The only thing the Skareb has going for it - lockout. The Judy could use an oil weight change to 7.5 to make it feel a whole better.
