I am looking for a solution to a small problem. My wife has a 43CM Trek 1000. We just moved to an area that has a lot of dirt fire roads that we want to ride but we can't find a knobby cyclocross style tire for the small 650 wheels on her bike. Anyone know of any manufacturer that makes a knobby that small or if you have any other idea, please respond....

Try the hutchinson cross comp, 26x1.3".

this equates to a 650x32mm, or thereabouts. great tires--I like to use them when I race my hardtail mtb on some of the more technical cross courses.

I thought that the Trek 1000 used 700c (622) wheels. If that's the case it may be a candidate for a 650B conversion? Check out http://www.freewebs.com/650b/conversions.htm.

I don't know what year Trek 1000 it is. The current ones are all 700c wheeled bikes. I have a 2005 Trek 1000 and with the front fork you can't fit very wide tires, maybe 622x28 max. There might be a little more clearance in the back but I haven't tried. A 650b conversion, while cool, may be too much trouble. It would require new wheels, tires, and brakes.

OK, after scouring the internet here's the only choice I see that you have:

Firstly - I don't believe you'd be able to get knobbies through the chainstays and the brake anyway but if you believe that you can:

1) Go onto Ebay and get a set of Mavic Crossmax wheels. (Be sure they aren't disk wheels which have very thin sidewalls since they aren't used as braking surfaces.)

2) Find a set of Hutchinson Cross Comp 25" c 1/3" knobbies.

IF the tires will fit in the brakes then you're in. However I would probably suggest that instead you find something like a small Bridgestone MB (for instance http://cgi.ebay.com/17-BRIDGESTONE-MB-3-carbon-barends-2-SPEED-Mt-Bike_W0QQitemZ7212447336QQcategoryZ98083QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

This will cost you about the same as making a very painful conversion on your wife's good road bike.

This is a 2005 Trek 1000 and it came stock with 650's. Keep in mind it is a 43cm bike. The 47 moves up to the 700's

Interesting, it appears that the regular (men's) Trek 1000 in 43cm comes with 700c wheels but the WSD comes with 650c wheels in the 43cm size.
