I want to prototype a touring frame. I would like the end result to be at about the quality level of a Surly TIG welded frame, apparently the frame I have currently was made in the same facility. Are there any cheap 4130 tubes available that one can use for this kind of project. Obviously the folks who make the bikes aren't splend 1-200 dollars for tubes, even allowing for the fact they mark up the tubes.

Call Joe Bringheli and ask for a set of Zero Tre tubes, they shouldn't cost more than $50 or so for a full set. Another option is to check Henry James and get some Versus tubes. Both of these tubesets are double butted and will build into a nice frame. You can try to find some generic straight gauge tubes from Fairing but the frame will not ride as well as with butted tubes. When you consider how much time it takes to build a frame, spending a little money on the tubes is a wise investment.

Thanks, do you consider these tubes useful with TIG joinery?

they're fine for TIG but you probably want to replace the seat tube with something with an ext. butt.

Joe Bringheli didn't really follow up. I'll try HJ next, not too optimistic since my project seems a little downmarket for these guys.

I've heard that about Bringheli, but his prices are the best. He's probably an old man and not tech savvy, ie he probably checks his email like never. Just call him over and over again and over and over again and over and over again until you get through. Let it ring multiple times. If you have to, keep on hanging up and trying again. Eventually he has to answer the phone.

I wouldn't exactly say he's old. Middle-middle maybe, but not old. His teenage daughter was playing basketball in the driveway when I was there last year.

He does have a regular job, and it might involve shifts. Maybe he's working nights and unplugging the phone during the day to get some sleep? Anyway, keep trying, he's a nice guy.

Thanks, I'm not ticked at him, I'm just no closer to my goal.

That's what I mean. You have to keep hounding JB until you get through. It sounds like I'm kidding, but I really am not. He does have the best prices, so if you want it bad enough, then just keep on calling him. If you have to, leave multiple messages! Seriously, don't worry. It's normal. Or if you are like some just keep calling let it ring for ever like 50 times straight, hang up, keep doing it. It's really not a big deal if you have speakerphone, then you just call, click it over to speakerphone and let it ring while watching TV or something. Eventually he has to pick up.

From my experience Joe is a great guy and very helpful. He always calls me back if I leave a message so it sounds strange if he doesn't get back to you.
