Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Alex Rims?

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about alex rims. I am looking at a wheelset with formula hubs and alex rims and have never heard anything about them, so I was wondering if anyone new if the were any good.

They are surely not the best out there, but I have a set and have had no issues. They are pretty heavy but they were cheap and seem solid enough.

I upgraded my Alex 295 to Mavic Open PRo w/32 db spokes and Ultegra hubs. I'm a heavy guy and some of the comments I heard on the Alex rims convinced me to make the change. I have a lot of confidence in teh MAvics,

i car hit my bike right in to my rear alex 450 the rim was pretty bent and i was able to beat it back in to shape and true the wheel back up
i have no complaints... yet...
if they do fail me i have an Open Pro wheel set ready in my mind...

I had a ggod crash with mine, causing the rim to be ovalized and bent. I completely destroyed my fork as well. I have since had the wheel rebuilt with better spokes, and it rides better than new. I like them. I think a well built wheel with quality spoke and nipples is more important that the rim anyway.

I use a pair of the medium deep version on my cross bike. I beat the hell out of those wheels on the local MTB trails, and they have never gone out of true. Cheap and strong, but not light.

It helps to know what model rim you are talking about... Alex makes everything from crap to really good... they actually make rims for quite a few big manufacturers, including Salsa with their very highly rated Delgado rims. The build is ultimately whats most important though... I've seen a lot of really good hand built Alex's and a lot of really ****ty machine built Alex's (the ones on Specialized and Bianchis come to mind).

Med-good quality Alex front, Mavic rear.
Formula hubs I'm not to sure about, I'm laced to Shimano's, the ones I've seen looked cheap.
I don't think the Alex is near as good as the Mavic, the choice is about durability.
So tough rear -economic front as my rear suffers way more abuse.

I'd have to agree that the quality of build would make a big difference, alex rims or not. But what's all this mumbo-jumbo about Mavic? Sun is where it's at yo :D

i have alex. they're not bad. i wanted something good enough to hold up to ****ty roads and nearly daily riding but not expensive enough i'd cry about it when they get dinged up. so far they're what i expected.

i have a set of alex dv15's laced to formula hubs from benscycle.com i've taken them on everything from smooth pavement to gravel even to some singletrack. the singletrack didn't work too well...blew both my tires, but other than that i'm very happy with them. if you're gonna rock brakes just know that they can rub the black off the rim fairly easily. i have some good streaks going on on my wheels, but i can live with it.

How's Alex R390's?

guys,,what about the Alex R500 hub,are they 10 speed compatible? I have mine intalled with GT 4 series and Im planning to upgrade my casseete..thanks for your help..

I run alex rims on my daily commuter; ran for 1 and a half years and they're still true as a needle.

I don't think such a hub exists; Alex R500 is a rim, a rather heavy set of rims.
