i'm talking about an early 90's model future shock or rockshox mag20/21, i need to know the steerer diameter, i know it's threaded, but is it 1" or 1 1/8"? please answer only if you're sure, thanks.

From that time period I would say 1"

There were 3 models of future shock, comparable to the mag 5 / 10 / and 20 (with carbon legs). The hreadless variety were 1 1/8, but I'll bet the threaded ones were 1". Only way to be sure is to take a tape measure and measure the diameter ;)

looks like it's a 1". if it is indeed 1" threaded then that means it and the 1 1/8 adapter/stem can go on my steel hardtail ss. my current steel ss has a rigid fork and quill stem. i'm hoping that it's a direct replacement if i put the mag21 on there, correct?

Are you aware that it is under recall? Take it to a Specialized dealership for a retrofit.

And pray that they can still get the parts. There's a shop in Albuquerque, NM that still has everytyhing you need, but that's the only one I've ever found that has the stuff. Call ahead before you go to your local Big S dealer just to make sure they've got what the fork needs. I'm in the same spot, but mine's a '96 Judy FSX w/carbon legs. It was recalled, too, for blown cartridges. I think I might drop it off to get rebuilt sometime soon, just to have it for the cool factor.
