Kenny G. Biggest waste of skill ever committed to record/tape/CD.

Discussion over.

Kenny G. is by far the worst musician ever. I dare you to enjoy those soundclips!

Wow.....some great selections here. Many artists that I've always thought were bad, but never thought anybody agreed with me because they were so darned popular.

So let me first agree with these so far:

Kenny G.
U2
Van Halen/Hagar
Sammy Hagar
Celine Dione
Dave Matthews Band
REM (very early REM was "ok")
ANY person from American Idol
Billy Ray Cirrus
Lee Greenwood
Lynard Skynard (+1000000000, racist talentless scumnuts)

I'll add a few:

Billy Squier
ANY modern pop singer/band (* Simpson, ***** Spears, ANY boy band, etc...)
Too many 80s bands to count (Adam Ant, Tracy Ullman, Falco, Buster Poindexter, etc....)

I will only disagree with the American Idol thing. Kelly Clarkson is a very talented singer. Otherwise yea...it's pretty straight.

Are we talking music you don't like, or bad musicians?

Everyone hates Kenny G's taste in music, but he's a good musician. Same with Celine Dione, Van Halen, Skynard, etc. All excellent musicians, you just don't like them.

Now truly bad musicians?

The drummer for The White Stripes.
The lead guitarist in Fight for Your Right to Party by the Beasty Boys.
That chick who danced the jig on SNL

Yoko Ono. I love avant-garde music, John Zorn's The Classic Guide To Strategy (music for duck call and sax) is wonderful, so it's not the genre that I don't like, I just can't stand the shrieking of that woman.

Since my sister in-law, boyfriend, and two kids are living with my family I've been subjected to horrific amounts of metal. So, my vote is Poison. ugh!

Obviously everyone disagrees in likes and dislikes, but I don't think you can say any of these people are the worst musicians of all time. It has too be a band that makes you cringe and puke when you hear them. Like the white stripes.
Ding ding ding! How I loathe the White Stripes. They're probably my most hated band.
I'll second the mention of the Donnas earlier. Bush was pretty horrible in their day too. I've never understood how Green Day became so revered...

I'm going to have to disagree on Nickelback. You guys might not like 'em but they are vastly more talented than some of the other "rock" bands out there. Pretty decent live too, which you can't really say about most bands these days.

Also going to have to disagree on Primus. Not for everyone, but some definite talent in that band.
That's just the rambling thoughts of a wanna-be rockstar drummer, but I am surprised no one's mentioned the Bee Gees or Abba.

who told Neil Young he could sing?

no one, but damn...can the man write a good song, or what?

oh, and U2? their first few albums kicked veritable ass. whose guitar sounded like the edge's back then? that's right, no one's. "where the streets have no name", for example...so lush and beautiful. it was the combination of them and brian eno on the early work that really brought forth the greatest music. that and they played their asses off live (has anyone seen the live at red rocks video?), not to mention bono didn't yet have a messiah complex.

i think there's a difference between what is really good, what is really bad, what is overrated, what is overpraised, etc.

Just the other day, i was talking with someone about jazz singer Holly cole. SHe liked her, but I think she just sucks canal water. She can't sing and goes off key. She's not a musician but she's not much of a singer.

Then there are the ones who have good voices or are talented but who do awful music, like Josh Groban. He's talented but his music is putrid!

Yeah, so many of the best songwriters are sub-par to terrible singers. And so many of the best singers are terrible song writers.

I'll take the good songs.

If we're talking about worst MUSICIANS (not bands), I'd have to mention these:

Ric Ocasek from the Cars
Whoever played Bass for Poison
Joan Jett's backup band "The Blackhearts" (She was/is great, THEY were terrible)

No way. U2 was solid pre-Eno and as long as he stuck to doing no more than playing keys. The minute he starts producing, everything goes to hell in a handbasket. Brian Eno is probably responsible for sterilizing more good and potentially great bands than anyone else in modern music. Look what he did to Bowie.

Eric 'Roscoe' Ambel from The Blackhearts was, and still is, a terrific guitar player. He's better known today as a producer (Bottle Rockets, Backsliders) and is an avid cyclist. There was a feature about him in Bicycling magazine last year.

I'd totally forgotten Ambel played with the Blackhearts. He did some great production for the Bottle Rockets. That's a band that really has dropped out of sight in recent years, though.

All of the above responses are strictly based on personal preferences-- Likes/dislikes.

The original question was "Who are the WORST musicians of all time"

That honor goes to "The Shaggs"
Their one and only vinyl album is extremely rare and when sold often end on eBay for well over $10k (No Joke!)

They did a Doug Sahm tribute album a couple years ago and have a new record -- I listened to some clips from it and it sounds more countrified then their previous stuff. I think '24 Hours a Day' and 'Brooklyn Side' are their best.

He was a mess when I saw them way back in 1981. The whole show was terrible, but I still liked her and the band. Any band that sells shirts that have a black heart on the front, and the wording "I have a big black heart on for Joan Jett" can't be all bad.

The drummer from Blue Oyster Cult.
This band used to bug me. They would play on Long Island during their 'popular' year(s) under the name "Soft White Underbelly". Reason was they thought there would be mass hysteria if people really knew it was Blue Oyster Cult playing and not some unknown band. Uhhh, OK.

I'm a bassist, so I determine if a band sucks by if their bassist sucks. There's a big difference between "playing what's right for the band" and just plain sucking at your instrument. #1 for me has to be Chris (Not Krist, for Christ's sake) Noveselich (sp.) from Nirvana. Dude looked like he was plunkin' a washtub with a string coming out of it. His basslines were uninspired and uninspiring. Such a shame that a band with such a cult/mainstream/iconic mastery of a musical generation had such a pathetic low end.

Wow... worst musician ever? That's easy. Has everyone forgotten William Shatner?

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0006J2G9I.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I agree, Shatner wins by a long shot. Shatner's version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is the worst pop song ever recored. He should have been put to sleep after committing this atrocity.

You can download it here (http://mysite.verizon.net/vze3j6z2/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/shat.mp3).

Warning: You may want to injure yourself after listening to this criminal noise.

His worse song is actually "Rocketman".
The Ben Folds album with Shatner is pretty good!

The Shaggs are quite fascinating, and I agree with FZ. For other obscure musical phenomena, check out Songs In The Key of Z (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1556523726/sr=8-1/qid=1148075862/ref=sr_1_1/002-6747628-2046451?%5Fencoding=UTF8) - look out for one Eilert Pilarm (Sweden's answer to The King) - Here's (http://eilertpilarm.to/) a link - check out "Lyssna/Hit 2", but Be Warned! make sure you're sitting down, and you're not holding anything pointed or sharp…

What I love about AC/DC is that they're very predictable. I know, pretty much, what I'm gonna get when I listen to them. Luckily, I like it!;) I still get goosebumps when I hear For Those About To Rock(We Salute You).
