Thinking of going to a lighter set of wheels to use for club rides. I like the Velocity deep V rim, thinking of a trying 36spoke either titanium 14g or double butted 14-15 and maybe XT 36 hubs or others, don't want to spend the money that a phil wood hub would require.our weight is 320lbs opinions?

Use Velocity Aeroheads with Revolution spokes (32 Front, 36 Rear) and Chris King hubs on our tandem. Great . . . and lighter than Rolfs.
Ti spokes would knock off a few more grams!

We have had good success withe the Deep V's on our tandems. But I would not trust ti spokes on a tandem. Even on a single bike they make for too flexy a wheel for my taste plus they don't seem to hold up as well. Spend that money on better hubs.

Revolution spokes weren't reliable on a set of single bike wheels I had built. And I'
m only 170#. As the weight differential is inconsequential, I'd stay with something stouter. You'd probably notice the aerodynamic advantage of using bladed spokes (which are stronger), over the weight advantage of real light spokes anyway. These aren't racing wheels....

Titanium spokes? I'd completely forgotten about them. I can't even find them in my most recent quality catalogue. I have a hard time imagining somebody who doesn't want to pay for a Phil Wood hub buying titanium spokes.

Stay away from ti spokes. The velocity deep v is a great rim.

Ditto. The reason Ti spokes are not a good idea is that their modulus of elasticity is lower than Steel's. That means you can't get them to take a keep a good tension as they stretch under load, and then the nipples undo. The alternative is to use a wider gauge Ti spoke, but then this defeats the object using a Ti spoke. Union used to make plain gauge Ti spokes in a range of colours including tie die multicolour in the 80s to go with the purple anodised everything trend, but they've since disappeared.

Re: Revolution spokes.
Have them on our tandem and currently pushing the 10,000 mark on the tandem and the spokes. No problems so far for us.
Weights: pilot 135, stoker 115, tandem sub-30 lbs.
Also for lighter spokes: have used Topolino front wheel with 24 spokes; spokes are carbon fiber with Kevlar coating. Worked fine.
Calfee adapted wheelset for a test with couple that are 'hard riders' at 300 lbs for team weight and reported 'No problems' with Topolinos (front and rear) in 3,000 mile test.
Would like to see the folks at Toplino put out a tandem rated wheelset!

I broke a spoke the other day on the front wheel(the back wheel is a Shimano Tandem hub 48spokes to Dyiad rim), which is from my commuter bike and is a low flange 36spoke wheel with Sun CR16 rims, so was looking into mybe a different set for some speed.

OK I am thinking something like this, a cheap light wheelset, would this work---------
XT Hubs(can they be spaced to 145mm?(disc-they have a high flange) 36spokes that are single butted 2.3 to 2.0 to Velocity Deep V rims, how about that? Seems to be pretty light and should have good speed and the 2.3-2.0 spoke looks strong for tandems.
our weight is 320lbs bike about 30 so 350lbs.
