Hi, I just found this forum today! A little about myself:
I'm 50 years old, live in Montgomery County, MD (work in D.C.) and have been biking for 3 years (I biked in my 20s, but mysteriously stopped, for some reason). My husband and I like to bike together -- he got into biking about 3.5 years ago and got me back into it. It's done wonders for my waistline and health. :D
I have 2 bikes (well, 3, really) --
1. A 2001 Terry "Trixie" road bike w/straight handlebars
2. A 2003 Trek 6700 WSD hardtail mountain bike (just got it!!)
3. A 1974 Panasonic women's frame road bike with oldstyle drop handlebars; originally a 10-speed but modified by my Dad, many years ago, into an 18-speed. (I ride this bike sometimes, but the frame's top tube is a bit too long for my comfort, now that I'm older.)
Hubby has a Trek 7500 hybrid and a Trek hardtail MTB - forget the model number.
I ride a lot, but I'm not terribly fast -- 15 - 16 mph on the flats is about my speed, slower on hills. (Losing weight has made the hills considerably easier . . .) I have logged a little under 1600 miles this year so far. I use Cyclists Log on my Palm Pilot to keep track of my rides, mileage and speed.
Our latest ride was yesterday -- we went to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to do a ride that includes Oxford and St. Michaels. I got a flat tire -- my second one ever, hard on the heels of the first -- and fixed it myself (not that I had a lot of choice . . . we were WAY out in the boonies!) We had to cut our ride somewhat short, but it was beautiful, and we even surprised a hawk that had landed by the side of the road. He flapped right in front of us, at eye level -- he had a 3-foot+ wingspan. He was beautiful!
Hubby and I also like to ride in Lancaster County, PA, and in Delaware (NJ, VA, wherever there's a good place to ride). We are members of the Lancaster Bicycle Club, probably the only out-of-state members of that group. (If you've never cycled in Amish country, do try -- you're in for a treat!)
