Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

how many of you guys have actually mashed your finger in a chain, resulting in pretty serious damage/stitches?
(i'm prompted to ask having seen the photo story of bostontrevors flying fingertip and
then mlprojects pic and advice to the upsidedown maintenance q)

Sheldon Brown issues a warning on his Fixed Gear Bicycles for the Road (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html) page, about the danger of wrenching on fixed-gear bicycles where the chain and gears will turn if the rear wheel turns. He's got a couple of gruesome pictures:

i was really worried that when i backed it out of my chain that the tip would fall off...
i had some scar tissue, numbness and limited movement for awhile, but its back to normal

i've had my fingernail chewed through before, but i guess it wasn't spinning fast enough for worse.
scared the crap out of me though. and its not as though i wasn't aware of the potential risk, it's just something that needs to happen before you REALLY appreciate the danger.
I've got a nice little gash on my middle finger, right hand right now. I was cleaning the chain and talking to someone and got a little careless, but thankfully the wheel was spinning pretty slow. It was painful cleaning the grease out of the wound, but I heal pretty fast.
jonb got his fingernail pretty well stabbed while building his keirin.
this thread is so Burrito Incompatible.

good friend of mine just punched a hole into the top of his thumb last night cleaning his hub... towel got drawn in by the chain/cog and pow, insta-thumb-blood-faucet
It's a good thing we can't use our dicks as a third hand.

I punched a hole in the middle of my fingernail from my bmx bike several years ago, no lasting damage.

"I believe there will be no charge for this 2-4 of beer."
"uh sir? There seems to be a finger chunk in my keg. So I guess that makes this on the house right? I think I saw a fingernail in the co2 pump too"
