My son is not yet four years old but tall, and he weighs 45 pounds. He is too big to be in the Rhode Gear seat we had used and too young to be on a tandem/trailer (even with a seat attached) as I'd be concerned he'd fall off (as happened to the child of a friend of mine). He doesn't alll that much like the Burley kid trailer I know carry him in. He likes to be up high and in the open. Does anyone know of a child seat that fits older or bigger kids? Kettler makes one rated to 50 pounds, but that won't last me too long. Assuming Kettler is the only choice, does anyone use it? Experiences? Thanks.

The only recommendations I would made are the child trailer (which seems problematic), a heavy duty child seat on an Xtracycle, a trailercycle or a tandem with child stoker kit.

Since you seem to have a child trailer, are you using it with closed door and screen or with open door? When she was 2 or 3, my daughter never wanted me to close the door, even in the rain. But with a wide open front, she was very happy. But if I closed the door, she wanted to get out. No "rock hazard" in our case as I have full fenders and mudflaps on the bike.

As long as you start slowly, I would not dismiss the trailercycle option. My oldest daughter started on the Trail-a-Bike at 4 years old sharp (she was a little bit on the short side and barely touched the pedals) and my youngest one litterally bumped her sister out at 3.5 years old (she's a bit taller). The first rides were less than 10 km long, but within a few rides we were up to the typical 60-100 km/day. I varied the rythm, stopped once in a while for icecream or playground and I always watched them in my mirror. I never used a seatrest (it's a bike after all) and never had them sleep on me. In other words, I think your child is more than ready.

Time for a trailer. I had the same problem, as my first child grows faster then well fed tabbacey. Putting larger, heavier children that high on a bicycle will upset the center of gravity and become a safty hazard.

A little under 4 years old isn't too young for a trailercycle. Rev. Chuck knows someone wanting to unload a five year old Adams Trail-A-Bike.
