Bicycle Mechanics - Help! I need 8 speed SunTour Superbe cassette

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello, I am on a minor retro quest in search of an early 90's correct SunTour 8 speed cassette for a Superbe 8speed 130mm cassette hub I purchased on ebay. Talk about an oddball. There is one vendor on ebay sellling 8 speed SunTour "Powerflow" cassettes, but these have the outer 2 cogs threaded together. The compatibility guide that I have shows a 7 speed body with a single cog lock ring. When I googled it the write up on the (now defunkt) BikePro website seems to say the same thing. Out of all the flavors of "AP", "APII", "Powerflow", "Accushift", blah,blah,blah...It appears to me that there may have only been one 8 speed configuration that fits this cassette body. I have an APII 7 speed powerflow that slides right on and the single locking cog fits fine too, but the cassette body is too long...if I went that route I might be alright if I could find one more cog (or maybe a spacer) with the same spline pattern. Should I give up ? I'm willing to wait for the correct item, I realize my quest may take a long, long time :(

You don't need the spacer to have a matching spline pattern, all it has to do is take up the slack. Look at the spacers on any other cassette. None have splines, they are just circular inside. If you can find a spacer of the correct width and the ID fits the freehub body you are good.

Without getting sarcastic, is there some reason why you have your heart set on using this obscure hub?
I don't necessarily have my heart set on it, partly I just playing catch up to different evolving bike tech that I missed out on. I did a 7 speed SunTour index on my old Puch with a 6/7 speed 126mm spacing and it worked surprisingly well. It got me thinking that I've missed out on some nice stuff. Some of the old SunTour stuff seems to work well, not perfect, but I'm satisfied. It just seems like it could be a rewarding exercise that warrants a little more of my time before I move on. Frankly, I'm a little surprised that there aren't some specialty dealers somewhere on the globe that are sitting on stockpiles of this stuff. I've been hitting ebay hard lately, not coming up with much.

i have a suntour cassette hub that might work with your cassette if that helps..
I have a couple of hubs. A 126mm 7speed and the 130mm Superbe 8speed. Right now I'm looking for an 8 speed cassette. Strangely, the Powerflow 7 speed cassette I have doesn't fit the Radius 7 speed hub, it only takes an earlier version cassette an "AP". I did find one AP cassette but it doesn't have all the bevels and ramps to enhance shifting. Does this matter?
