I'm waiting for my new LHT frame, and I'm asking around my local shops for help fairing and reaming the frame for headset and BB installation. One shop said these operations may not need to be done because Surly does a good job of prepping these areas at the factory. Is this true, or should I keep looking for another shop to do the work?

Doesn't need to be done.

I verified that with a local shop that does Surlys (Portland OR), and the two frames I got were well prepped at the factory. If you get a frame that needs it for some reason, I'd get back to Surly about it before spending the money.

The past two Surly builds (1x1 and Cross Check) I've done did not require any additional reaming or facing.

There's just a bit of paint that needs to be removed. You can do that yourself with a good knife, as the paint is fairly soft.
Takes maybe half an hour to an hour, depending on how careful you want to be...
