How much should I worry about wear on my back tire while using the trainer this winter. The weather around here has just turned nasty and now that we are back to standard time, my only option during the week is the trainer. Will my back tire wear prematurely compared to the front by the spring? Should I buy a slick for the trainer?

My experience with a rear wheel trainer was that rear tire wear was almost non-existent. That was with a tyre inflated to max. pressure, and the resistance roller contact that is firm but not excessive. I can only see tyre wear occurring with the resistance roller contact being fairly excessive...

If you are using your mtb on the trainer...yes get a slick. You will wear the knobbies off (and the sound is annoying).

Even on the road bike, I save slightly worn front tires for use on the trainer in the winter. Bike tires are $$$ these days. Save the good ones for the road/trail.
