Foo - Trivia for the Day Thread...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm guessing the America's Cup, too, given the hint. Though if you consider Formula One auto racing to be a participatory sport (hey, Alex Yoong got his race seat!), then I'd have to give the nod to F1.
Does that also explain why your eyes get green in some photos? Oh, wait. Sometimes it red......
Red eyes is due to reflection from the blood vessels in the back of your eye. Pictures turning out with a slight green or yellow hue is due to your extreme sensitivity to green compared to other colors. Likewise computer monitors that aren't properly color adjusted tend to end up with a green or yellow tint. It's also why one should never use dark blue on light blue if one expects others to read a webpage. If you ever try hand-calibrating a monitor (not extremely accurate, but it's free), you'll notice that it's ultra-easy to tell when green is set just right, and red's not that hard. It's really hard to eyeball just when exactly blue is set just right, and you can even purposely set it pretty far off before noticing a significant change.
Before the 1800, there were no separately designed shoes for left and right feet.
Measured from sea level, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. K2 is a close competitor, but satellite mapping has confirmed that Everest has the upper hand. No big surprise there.
But measured from the base of the mountain, Hawaii has the tallest.
The original 1907 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (the car that really made the company's name) is currently owned by Rolls-Royce and is still running. It has over 500,000 miles on it, with no major overhauls. Its engine is so smooth at idle that you can balance a penny uprght on it.

It wasn't spelled "Boxcar"? I knew that, but if your spelling is correct, I didn't know it was spelled that way.
Another interesting fact...about my family history. At the time, my grandfather was doing aerial photography in WWII and has the claim to fame of taking the first aerial photos of Hiroshima (maybe Nagasaki too, not sure) after the bomb was dropped.

"America's" Cup yacht racing. It is even more expensive than polo or power boat racing.
BINGO USAZorro! Although jschen, I'd guess F1 racing is probably close to the same. Here's a unique thing about America's Cup yacht racing though. Participants wil spend 10s of millions of $ to either defend or challenge for the America's Cup. There is NO prize money per se for the winner; just the respect, glory, and bragging rights to having the best sailing technology and skill in the world. Now there's pride in your sport, eh?!
BTW, "America's" Cup is not named after the country (USA) but after the boat that first won it in 1851.

If you laid all the streets in NYC end-to-end, they'd stretch all the way to Tokyo.
SBW and jschen, what kind of cabbage is on Bruce McCullough's head?
What movie did Angelina Jolie win an Academy Award for?

Alexander? Pfft...just kidding.
I remember being surprised about that. It was for that weird mental movie... Girl Interrupted, wasn't it?

The 777 is huge. My crew had the plesure of refueling one back in '95 /'96. It was complete on the outside but the interior had not been installed. The 777 was tall enough that the ladder we used to accsess the fuel panels on a 737 had to be put on top of the fuel truck to get the lineman up to the fuel panel on the 777. Even at that it was still a little short. The flight crew and test engineers on that flight told us that the nacelles were as large as the 737 fuselage.
So Cuda2K has his trivial info correct.

January 27th will be the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth.
(Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with bikes or sports or typewriters or . . . )
...and the 32nd anniversary of my birth! :p

Probably too easy but...
What's the fastest passenger train that does regularly scheduled service, and how fast does it go?

Hey InfamousG- Yes, the TGV in France as well our Shinkansen bullet trains here in Japan do go 300 kph, and used to be the fastest passenger trains. Not any more...
Wasn't there something about a faster train in Shanghai recently?
Domestic U.S. measuring devices (rulers, tape measures etc) measure left to right, their English counterparts measure right to left

Ding-ding-ding! Close enough for government work :D !
There's a "mag-lev" (magnetic levitation) train that runs from Shanghai to Pudong Airport that travels 431 kph! I've never ridden it, but I have ridden the 300 kph bullet trains here in Japan. A few years back when my youngest daughter was 5-years-old I took her on one. She looked out the window and said, "Papa why is this airplane flying so low?" :)
