Commuting - OK commuters, how do yuo like your headwinds?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Of course, those who regularly read my posts will know that I would rather be perpetually riding into the wind if I had the choice. However, if I can only have it one way (usually the case), I'd rather cop it going home from work than on the way to work. This is mainly because I can really work off the day's frustrations on the way home. Sure, I could try it with a tailwind on the way home, but it just wouldn't be the same.
Which do yuo prefer?
When I was commuting, I wast traveling East to work in the morning and West back home in evening. However, in Montreal, the wind is Westerly 99% of the time, which means I almost always had a headwind going home in the evening (and nothing in the morning because I left too early). I guess it kind of grew on me and that is the way I like it now.
Don't mind it on the way in to work, when I'm fresh, but prefer a tailwind on the way home. (Rare here)

I'll pass on it both ways. My commuter is a relatively heavy hybrid.

I usually have the headwind going home... which sucks because my route to work is mostly downhill going to work. I do have one monster hill going to work, but the rest of the ride is mostly a 1 or 2% downgrade. So going home I not only have to contend with a headwind, but also a constant hill. I'd MUCH rather have my headwind in the morning. That way the headwind would cancel out the downhill and it would probably be like riding on flat road. I've had a tailwind ONCE going home. What an enjoyable ride. :0

Chris-man,
I like my headwinds to hit the back of my head!

When I first started riding as an adult, headwinds always frustrated me. Hills, though, I didn't mind. Sometimes I even liked them.
I decided this difference in attitude was irrational, and began approaching winds with much more patience. Now I don't mind them so much. Sometimes I even look forward to a good go into the wind.
It's especially easy to get frustrated by wind because all of the visual and balance cues from windless, fast riding are present. Yet you don't go as fast. So, I tried guarding against the temptation to ride as normal in the wind, and I found things less frustrating.
Having said this, I prefer to have the wind at my back on the way home.

on my commute the headwind is usualy on the way home its worst on our harbour bridge one day last week it nearly brought me to a stand & it seemed to suck the air out of my lungs it was so strong.the next day my legs were a bit achey from 30ks of strong headwind.on the other hand its good to have a tail-wind on the way to work as im usualy late for work & speeding along with ease seems to put me in a positive mood to start the day:D :D

I like head,But don't like the wind.:D
I'd rather have no wind. But, realistically, I pick having a wind on the way to work. I always like the second half of the ride with a tailwind.
If you don't like wind, stay away from Wyoming.

Driving in my lazy-man's V-6 Mercury today, I noticed (cyclists notice things escaping others' attention) that I could cruise at 65 mph. without the slightest concern for headwinds.
Like I said, "lazy-man's" vehicle.
With biting sarcasm I vote for head both ways thank you. You either forgot or over looked where I like to get blasted the most, going uphill of course!
What I love the most is how some days you have the wind in your face going, and you get off work with the memory it was out of the west so it will push you home, but some how the wind shifted while you were on your shift, and it's out of the east now. And what I hate most is those lying flags, the ones that hang limp, when I swear I am getting blown off the bike.

I personally prefer headwinds with rain, preferably a cold driving one at about 38 degrees in the dark. Maybe throw a few semi's passing close enough to force you into potholes and life gets even better. There is a law around here that a headwind must be blowing in whatever direction makes it most difficult for me at the end of my ride.
Seriously, headwinds are great for training; it's like a hill-free hill.
