Hi

I'm 195cm and around 70kg, it seems that nowatter what I eat I'll not gain weight, it's the same thing for my brothers and sisters, they are also skinny even though they are not all eating very healthy. Why is that?

What does this mean for my biking, should I eat more when biking? should I eat earlier? should I drik more? etc. etc.

Can somebody help me a bit with these question or perhaps point me to an article that can explain things for me.

You and you family are ectomorphs (http://www.vistamagonline.com/articles/page.php?tp=1&p=1&id=1&s=ectomorph). So am I (180 cm, 61 kg).

Maybe you should ask yourself if you're satisfied with your body type.

After suffering decades of taunting and concerned lectures from busybodies, I've come to terms with my weight. Thanks to genetics, I'm a natural climber. I suspect you are, too.

same here. i'm really thin but look healthy. my body weight, however, is way below average for my height (i'm 5'11 and 135lbs with clothes). in fact, i don't tell people i know because they'll just think something is wrong. i eat plenty of good food and get more exercise than most people, so i'm not worried. i don't tell my GF that i weigh less than her though.... ;)

Why do you care? Do you run out of energy or need to lift more? If you can lift what you want then you should be able to ride faster up hills than the rest of us.

Eat more, move less.

I care because I would like to try and understand my body. I've already asked several people and got all kind of weird answers, so now I'm trying you guys ;)

My intentions are not to gain weight, my concerns are I eat as I should.

I eat normally healhy food, I don't think I run out of energy while biking, of course I get tired, but I think it's the same as everybody else.

Most articles I have read are for "normal" people , who gain weight if they eat unhealthy and don't exercise. I don't think I fall into that category, so my concerns are, if any special guidelines apply for me?

Thanks for the link, interresting reading. I'll try and study it some more.

I assume you bike a lot as you on this forum :)
Are there anything that do different that the majority of your bike fellows?

And yes I think I'm a good climber (compared to my fitness level) but on the flat I can really have a hard time, like you I guess?

Yes, I bike a lot. 10-14k miles per year, 800k-1.2M feet.

My biggest problem is dehydration, something that I think is common with ectomorphs. I make sure to hydrate plenty and get electrolytes. I've experimented with glycerol, which seems to help a little on rest days.

I wouldn't say I really have a hard time on the flats, I just sit behind someone big. :)

I really appreciate your answers :-)

How do you get glycerol, mix it with pure water or something else?

i'm ectomorphous as well, although i believe ectomorphs tend to be taller.. i'm five feet five. But built like an ectomorph, including having the sort of knock-knees. I'm 125 which is average, average height... i was 120 last year but I'd been sick and lost weight. It's metabolism, that's for sure- don't complain. Eat what the hell you want, eat when you're hungry- just don't do junk food.

The E-Caps/Hammer Nutrition sell liquid glycerol, calling it "Liquid Endurance". Here's the E-Caps web page (http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD.ID=4042&OMI=10130,10047&AMI=10130).

I mix about two tablespoons in water, three times a day.

Thank you again, is that only on rest days, what about training days or race days?

I am the same way. I can eat what i like and not put on weight. Also has its downsides too. I spent a month biking from Lodon to Rome. At the time i was 5'10" and weighed 130lbs. Spending cloes to 6 hours in the saddle every day, i burned more calories then i ate. I was definately in better shape then i had ever been by the end of the trip, but didnt have anything to show for it. I still weighed the same but looked a little more gaunt in the face, and my oh-so skinny legs might have had what some would call the appearance of muscle on them.

In the 3 or 4 years since that time, i've put on 15lbs (yay for college) and am in no where near as good shape as i was. But thats what happens when you cant/dont excersise as much and eat horrible cafteria food.

Personally, if you are eating healthy food then there is nothing to worry about. If you want to put on weight, eat burgers, pizza and calzone and dont excersise for a few months. The hardest part is loosing the weight, which is my problem (5'10", 148lbs now...my wight also seems to go to my belly, so only notice it when shirt is off. makes it look like i drink - which i dont).

koger I have to ask how old you are. Up until I was about 25 I was 186 cm tall and between 55-60kg. Then over the course of 5 years I put on 15kg and leveled out at 76.5 where I am now.

Get a proper body fat measurement done. If you've a healthy amount of body fat, there's no need to change anything really.
Gaining weight in fat alone, if your body fat level is fine, is not what you'd want, I think... Some people with low weights can actually still have a high body fat percentage, so they could even afford to lose weight.

I'm about half ecto and half meso (although I don't agree fully with such a simplistic classification system). 178 cm tall and currently 64 kg. Thin bone structure (wrists 15 cm circ.), relatively long arms and legs for my height (85-86 cm inseam). I can fairly easily gain and lose weight, but unless I make drastic changes in my energy intake, I stay the same for years (+/- 1-2 kg), no matter what I eat. I'm also pretty good at building muscles, but it would probably take me decades to get big in any objective way... :)

I only use glycerol when I'm having trouble with dehydration, which is usually on rest (travel) days or when I go to altitude. I might consider using it right before a long ride that I know will be hot. The studies show that it helps performance the most on long efforts in the heat.
