Ullrichs major problem next year wil be motivation. This is something that only he can aquire for himself.

He has to work it out inside himself.

I truly feel bad for his new team that simply hired a troublesome rider, but hopefully the change in things will help him get out of his inner troubles.

P.S. Plus a smack upside his head by his Momma wouldn't be a bad idea.

If he is a countrymen of yours, it's great you are pulling for him...personally IMO, unless he learns how NOT to mash those big massive gears when climbing, the only thing he will see is Armstrong's rear end...there is NO way he can beat Lance unless he changes his style.

I think so too, I'd like to see Ullrich win, but he'll have to become a more efficient climber. Those big gears are what f***ed his knee, so maybe he'll HAVE to change tactics or it's curtains for him.

But if he's really determined and he changes his style, he could do it. Never underestimate a determined german!

I really hope that Jan finds the motivation he needs with the CSC/co-sponsor to be named later team. I also hope that he gets his knee back into shape. This is a man that won the tdf, and deserves the respect that comes with such a win.

Most importantly, I want to watch a competitive 2003 tdf!!! Perhaps Jan is the sole rider that can make that happen? I’m a huge Lance fan, but I respect all of the riders, and wish the best to all of them! :D

Well, using the highly accurate scientific method based on the ratio - # of Bikeforum posts:2003 TDF final standings - LA wins by a 2:1 margin :p

As with any athelete at that level, the mental status is most important. Ullrich will do well if he wants to do well.
He has plenty of doubters. He hasn't competed in over a year and probably doesn't have many miles under his legs but he was overweight and completely uncompetitive at the Giro yet was right there with Lance at the TDF a few short months later (2000).

He is a huge talent. For that reason alone, I hope he comes back. He, like Lance, is a great all-rounder that comes along maybe once in a generation.

He has never doped for sports. He did it partying with drugs that would not help him in racing- even if they could, he was not racing at all so it is moot. He fell into the trappings of fame and success. Remember that he is still young. Anyway, it is all behind him and he seems to be moving forward.

I'm glad every stupid thing I did from 18-25 wasn't under the microscope or else I might not have made it this far! Would anyone? As with anything, I put on my BS filter and ignore all that and concentrate on the sport.
1. Ullrich is a talent capable of winning the TDF or any race he enters.
2. Ullrich's state of mind for racing is a ?
3. He may join CSC, but without Tiscali there may be a $ problem.
4. Is he capable of a comeback? Alot of people in this thread sound like the French when Lance got cancer.
Answer=yes, Ullrich can comeback. If there is one thing Lance taught me is that anyone with heart and iron will can overcome. Guess what, Ullrich has both.
5. Can Ullrich compete at the 03 TDF? I'll wait to see how Ullrich does at the spring classics and Giro or TDsuisse.

Yeah, right. Yuo can only win one race a year and that's it. We never see you in the classics or the Giro or the Vuelta. I even kicked your butt at the Olympics. You can only beat me when my knee hurts.

Very good point!

Apparently Ullrich is planning to race the Setmana Catalana this spring, but which team he'll be with isn't clear.Apparently Coast and Saeco want him but I hope things work with CSC. The Setmana is a great race, lots of big names have won it in the past.

Incidentally, Ullrich's birthday is Dec 2. I know this because it's right after mine. We have a Procycling calendar. Laurent Jalabert's birthday is Nov 30, the day after mine!

I read today on Velonews.com that Jan is planning to ride Le Tour and his goal is to win. I hope he shows up on form and gives Lance a run for his money. I want Lance to take five in a row, sure, but by golly, I want to see a race!

I think Ullrich will be the next one to win the Tour, myself. I don't necessarily mean that he will win this summer. I mean that the next man to win after Lance will be Jan.

Lance is that age at which he cannot improve any more, and at which there's a high likelihood that he will fall off in performance. Lance is now 31. Indurain, for example, crushed everyone in '94 when he turned 30. By 96, when he was 32, he couldn't hang in the mountains anymore. Similar results can be seen in the careers of other cyclists. Lance will be 31 during this year's tour, Jan will be 29. There's likely to be a window, then, of a couple of years during which Jan is at his prime and Lance has slipped. Jan could win another yellow jersey during this time.

I hope it will be a good race this summer, in any case.

That's the thing with grand tour riders, they tend to age faster and have shorter careers. Unfortunately for Jan, most of his best years as a tour rider, especially in the TDF, were spent being second to lance. Of course, he has won the Vuelta in that time. I'd like to see him try to win another grand tour, like the giro! Hit for the cycle! The problem with the giro is that if you do it, you can really get fried, which isn't a great idea if you want to do the tour.

Incidentally, tomorrow is Jan's birthday! Dec 2.

It doesn't seem Lance is slowing down yet though. He probably will soon, but I would bet he will win the next two tours and retire. Last year... it seemed that he made the competition look pathetic.

I doubt it will happen, but it would be great to see Ulrich come back for the 03 TDF in good shape.
