Living Car Free - One mom, two kids, four bags of groceries, no car, USA

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Nice find. I was just getting over my overwhelming desire to get an xtracycle, but it has once again plowed into the number one spot of things i am saving money for, replacing the Bianchi San Jose.

Wow, that's awesome! Needless to say the link has been sent to my better half. :D
Did you all check out the video? She rides too much in the door zone if you ask me, but hey, this isn't A&S (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=8) where all the VClots go nuts. ;)

that's because i was holding the camera in the VC-approved zone, crowding her. i had 4 bags of groceries on my rig too, one hand for the camera...

I'm seriously considering the xtracycle as well. :) More and more after I see those pics/videos.
I think I'll get an xtracycle and a stokemonkey when I have kids. :) Those are great photos!

LOL I was poking fun at the VC people, actually. It's obvious that there was nowhere else for her to go because of the camera position. :D
That's so cute. I hope some of our flamers see it. These sure don't look like "irresponsible hippie parents." :)

Add me to the list too: Sent link to my S.O. (our boys are 5 & 7), and am now lusting after an xtracycle. I find myself volunteering to make small grocery runs (with neither xtracycle nor trailer yet I can still only do small ones) just so that I can use my bike to do it! I should start keeping track of every insurance payment I'm not making since getting rid of my car last month! :)

I don't know--I carry 4 or 5 bags of groceries on my back all the time. More if I leave my tools and spare tube at home. But I don't have to schlepp any rugrats! My helmet is off to these "cycle moms."

Agreed. My helmet is off to them too.
I've only seen something like this in New York City during the summer. Portland must be a heck of a place to live.

Oddly enough, the thought had crossed my mind today about what the feasibility of a family having no car is... I guess this is one possible answer.

love that video.
I do wish she'd adjust her helmet a little further down on her forehead to protect those obviously exceptionally brilliant frontal lobes.
Really though she's so cool.

The VC accomplished a lot with bicycles, even the US Army admits it now, check this little web page from their transport museum:

For me... I'd say "Lose the batteries!"
By far the best post I have seen on any bike forum! I have never heard of an xtracycle before and now I want one. OUTSTANDING!

not an uncommon sight in amsterdam, although on a normaly the small child rides up front, and you can only get two bags of groceries in. but this looks a lot safer and easier.
I've always thought that the xtracycles were nifty, but pretty expensive. But if you can buy one and sell a car, then you've paid it off in a month.
I have to say, getting my Xtracycle was a great improvement to my quality of life. It's perfect for groceries, great for commuting, and every few days someone says, "Nice bike!"
