BMX - how to get bike park started???

Is there any way I could get a bike park built. I live in Hawaii and there are no bike parks only skateparks. The places where we ride are all illegal and we eventually get kicked out. Do you think that I could actually get the state to build a bike park. If I got a ton of bikers to write letters do you think they might think of building one. That would be cool

The first problem with that was addressed in a previous post by you. How many riders do you know? There has to be a demand first. If you want a private business to build a park, there has to be enough users for them to make a profit. If you want your local government to build it, there has to be enough people of voting age that want it built. Kids have no say in anything.

Dang, that sucks. If I got a ton of adults to want it, do you think it would happen. Because I could get a lot of adults to do that even if they don't bike. If they did build a park, I bet you there would be a lot more bikers in Hawaii. There aren't many because there is no where to ride. I could think of so many places to build. That would be so awesome. I am tired of building jumps by myself. It takes like forever.

bmxers are pretty much out on their own...local councils rarely even consider issues like this...the only way you will get something u are happy with is if you do it urself.

Not having a place to ride never stopped anyone. If there aren't a lot of people riding in your area, it's because they don't want to. Or they're hiding from you.

Yeah, they probably don't want ten-year-olds that can't get more than two feet off a "seven-foot-tall jump" to break their neck at the local trails.

That's very true. You wouldn't beleive the amount of respect they have for you if you ASK properly to get a skatepark built, an area for dirt jumps, or whatever. I went to The Park and Recreation manager to ask for a piece of land to build dirt jumps on so they they ddin't have to tear them down every year or so when they found them. Very coon we had a spot for jumps, AND dirt droped off at the spot as well. The same thing happened with our skatepark being built, but that was before my time. Asking never hurts.

But it helps so much if you talk to the right people, with respect about what you want done.

Yes, I contacted him about getting area for dirt jumps. I e-mailed him and he talked to the other board members, but in the end they just wanted me to attend a council meeting thingy. Within a few weeks we had a bunch of land near our skatepark that we could build on. Of course, since I live in MN, any un manned park has to be tier 1 or less. Which is 4 feet, so the only rule is that they can't be over 4 feet tall and we can't bring any other ramps down there, only dirt. Oh yeah, we didn't even have to dig, we just met the people down there one day and they had a bob cat and a dump truck with dirt and we just told them where to put it. It was great. What they don't know is that we dug into the ground as well as pushing the height of the jumps to about 4 12/ to 5 feet. So they're not the biggest jumps but it's better than what we had(nothing).

If your county has parks and recreation planning meetings, show up with a group of bikers. The more tax payers(or children of) you have the more voice you have.

How does a meeting that had over one-hundred riders turn up sound? It was a fruitless effort; the Parks & Recs guy that they brought out to defend their decision to keep bikes out of skateparks made the completely ridiculous statement of "bicycle ramps use different transitions than skateboard ramps". The complete ignorance of the actual facts was humorous, but disappointing.

I hate when they do that. In a neighboring town around here, there is a Saktewave free park, and they say bikes arn't allowed because they will break the ramps. Even though on the Skatwave brochure that I have, Bruce Crisman states "The reason I Skatewave ramps are good is because they have all the small rails and ledges for skaters and Rollerbladers, and they are tough enough to stand up to bikes." So I showed that to the other towns Park and Rec. manager and they said "well, the skaters and bikers don't get along, so you bikers can't ride there." So why arn't the skaters not allowed, and only bikers can go there? I will never understand the decision to have bikes and boards either have different rates to pay to go into parks, or just not being allowed in at all. Most likly because there is no proper reason behind it.

Show up at every meeting, not just one. The policies wont change on their own.
