Bicycle Mechanics - Changing my Stem

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just got a Specialized Sirrus Comp which comes with a straight bar handelbar and a 17 degree rise stem. I find that I am sitting up more than I want to. I live in a fairly hilly area and could use the improved power of a more streached out position for the hills. I am wondering about changing to either a 5 degree or zero degree stem. The other option is to flip the stem and end up with 17 degrees negative (which may be too much).
Any thoughts???

If you have a local bike shop, you might ask them if you can try some stems before you buy them. They probably have some lying around you can try.

You might try this link (http://www.habcycles.com/fitting.html) for stem fitting info. This chart will give you a very good estimate of where your bar will end up for a given amount of rise and stem length. Find the measurements of the stem you have now (17 degrees @ ?? mm) and plot that on the chart and then figure out where you want to move the bar to and see what that measurement is.
