My cousin is becoming a city bus driver and I asked him if there were any cycling specific instruction.

His reply:
So far, only to let them have the lane they are in and pass them like you would any other vehicle and stay behind them untill there is room to pass them.

I don't think the bus driver who passed me yesterday on the way home received the same training. But I was glad to hear they teach the proper method.

It really is that simple.

I don't think the Metro drivers here get that kind of training either. As a class, I find Metro drivers to be the scariest on the road from a cycling perspective.

You can teach the rules ...... that's simple.

Now, teaching someone to care, tha'ts a whole 'nother deal and most of the problem, I think.

Happily, we have no buses, city or otherwise in our little town and I sure don't envy those of you who do.

it varies from bus driver to bus driver. some are very respectful, and i ride that same route too from time to time when i am unable to bike so some of them know me. But i did have one scary experience where i this bus passed me so close i "surfed" on the side of the bus. I still have a black mark on my bike shell to show for it. I was riding the side of the bus, but i was too scared to push off the bus bc i was afraid i might counterbalance too much and fall under the wheels.
