According to the guy at D and D (a lbs here in sf) Somec is a small Italian shop that makes frames for a few pros and custom jobs for anyone willing to pay. Supposed to be a very high-quality operation...

Does anyone know about stem and seatpost sizes?

Here's some info taken from the web:

"In the 60's, Oliviero Gallegati worked as a mechanic for the Giro d'Italia. Seeing a need to establish standards for Giro mechanics, he established the "Mechanic's Society"--(SOcieta' MEChanica), thus creating the acronym for SOMEC frames. A rarity in Italy, as he did not name his frames after himself as most other Italian framebuilders do, but after his society. Today, every SOMEC frame is made in Lugo, and is crafted from steel or aluminum. SOMEC still makes less frames in a year than a mass producer makes in an hour. (note: When you see the SOMEC logo, do not be confused with Ferrari. As the story goes, back in ancient history when Oliviero and Enzo Ferrari both wanted to show the Cavallino on their product, they came to an agreement as fellow "Romagnesi": Ferrari would put the tail up, SOMEC the tail down. They have never argued from that day)."

that's prolly a more appropriate question for the seller

i always forget what the standard on most of those italian bikes made of columbus is... stem would be the usual quill stem size. seat post is smaller than 27.2. 26.8?

somecs are awesome. that snippet of history above is about the only available info. i had one that a friend left at my house for a few months and it was too small for me but an excellent ride none the less. theres the standard "70s-80s italian track frame made of columbus with the usual details" then there are those ones (like somec) that add a little bit of extra. chromed ends/rear triangle for one... usually pantographed fork crown for another... great paint that isn't too chippy (as is often the detracting point of italian frames from then)... very tight geometry -- no tires larger than 23mm. sound construction, great bb shell, classic small-shop classic craftsmanship and attention to detail, cool decals, good lugwork.

great buy all around!

My Colnago is 27.2, though I've heard plenty of odd sized seat tubes before.

YAY! I totally bought this in impulse...I wanted a track frame...overslept and missed out on a keirin red track frame...did a search this morning and this thing popped up. I'm pleased.

true... i guess i was too hasty in saying "standard"... i know my paramount (reynolds 531) is 27.2 and that campy seatpost will not fit in any of the italian bikes i have/had on account of being too large. im dealing with a sample population of like 4 frames, and make a stupid assertion like that!

i can check the somec that belongs to my buddy tonight actually if need be, i'm pretty sure though that we once tried changing his seatpost out for an extra 27.2 i had and it was in fact too large, but who knows.

awesome bike none the less, those somecs are something special i think. the decals look like something out of pacman too.

(ps, hey absntr! i finally got them tufo's off and will drop them in the mail to you (if you still want).. i know, like 10 months late! i lost track of them for a bit.)

I think 27.0 was a "standard" seat post size for Italian frames for a while. I had/have a Bianchi/Torpado that took/takes a 27.0.

Then again, as my favorite curmudgenly LBS mechanic always says, "The two words we never use in this store are 'universal' and 'standard.'"

(yep! assuming it's unchanged. will wash them in the shower and send them your direction)
sorry for threadjack.
GO SOMEC!

(dah! I was just going to ask you about those! the casati is getting an italian tubular wheelset built super soon.)

and go somec!

everyone: please stop making me look stupid! i've amended my comment already, and i know there is no standard and i know theres italian bikes with like 39.7 seat tubes as well as ones that are ovalized and 15.6 as well!! i am an idiot, no need to rub my nose in it

dr. kellz: sorry bout the tufos! absnthr was promised them like a year ago and i was SO lazy about it. you got that jersey though bud, and that thing is sweeeeet! italian tubs you say? hm hm hm!

and, GO SOMEC AGAIN!

oh, totally. it was going to be like "hey, did absntr decide that he didn't want those tufos? still have them? ok, cool. i'll send you a pint of Dracula's Special Reserve 1821 and some coffee beans for them... ?"

and yea, this was a good threadjacking.

drac_vamp
01-26-06, 02:29 PM
consider it jacked dude! absntr is going to have to pay it forward though, you know, and when he does, his good deed is going to be to forward them tufos down to you for rocking on the casati (once again!). no doubt.

PS: measurement in on the somec seatpost size: definately not 27.2... 27.0 is the winner! at least on this somec.

absntr
01-26-06, 02:40 PM
AK - that wheelset going to be clincher? Cause these tufos are those clincher tubulars.

Back in the middle 80's, Sal Corso, owner of Stuyvesant Bikes on 14th Street imported a bunch of these. At the time, he was asking $350, so you got the bike for a very good price.
I'm such an idiot: I worked there, coulda gotten one even cheaper, and didn't.

Enjoy your way cool new ride!

adamkell
01-26-06, 02:47 PM
no, the wheelset's going to be tubular. hm, mix-up!

i really thought they were tubs, but yea, i just found the email in which drac described them. sure enough, "tubeless clinchers."
